Of a Musician, a Poet, and a Madman./ Monomad Challenge (Eng/Esp)

Every Cuban has a little bit of a musician, a poet, and a madman inside them; this is one of the most accurate popular sayings I’ve ever heard. And I don’t mean that literally, but in the sense that these three facets reflect who we are so fully that it’s hard to explain in just a few words. That’s why I turn to photography, where I can express myself best.

Todo cubano lleva dentro un poco de músico, de poeta y de loco; este es uno de los refranes populares más acertados que he oído nunca. Y no lo digo en sentido literal, sino en el sentido de que estas tres facetas reflejan tan ampliamente quiénes somos que resulta difícil explicarlo en pocas palabras. Por eso recurro a la fotografía, donde puedo expresarme mejor.

As musicians, we know how to adapt to any situation—no matter how difficult—and come out on top; it just takes a little time, and we’re ready to go. I remember an uncle who could do everything—or almost everything; he’d fix a TV just as easily as he’d milk a cow. Sure, sometimes he exaggerated, but the man was truly a jack-of-all-trades.

Como músicos, sabemos adaptarnos a cualquier situación —por muy difícil que sea— y salir adelante; solo hace falta un poco de tiempo y ya estamos listos. Recuerdo a un tío que sabía hacer de todo —o casi todo—; arreglaba un televisor con la misma facilidad con la que ordeñaba una vaca. Claro, a veces exageraba, pero el hombre era realmente polifacético.

As poets, the art of the word comes very naturally to us, and in the face of any adversity in life or in moments that call for it, we just have to let ourselves speak, and everything works out. We’ve learned to survive by using words as a tool.

Como poetas, el arte de la palabra nos sale de forma muy natural, y ante cualquier adversidad en la vida o en los momentos que lo requieran, solo hay que dejarnos hablar, y todo se resuelve. Hemos aprendido a sobrevivir utilizando las palabras como herramienta.

There’s a joke that goes like this: when a thief was caught on a farm for killing a cow, they let him speak, and in the end he convinced everyone that it was the cow that had lunged at him and accidentally impaled itself on the knife—can you imagine?

Hay un chiste que dice que, al agarrar a un ladrón en una finca por haber matado una vaca, le dejaron hablar al ladrón y al final convenció a todos de que había sido la vaca la que se le había lanzado encima y atravesado el cuchillo sin querer, imaginense.

And speaking of madness, what can we say about our madness—that blessed madness—that keeps us sane? If it weren’t for this madness, we’d all be truly crazy. It’s not a tongue twister; it’s just that to live in reality in this part of the world, we need a certain level of madness.

Y de loco, ¿qué decir de nuestra locura, bendita locura, que nos hace estar cuerdos? Si no fuese por esta locura, todos estaríamos realmente locos. No es un trabalenguas; sucede que para vivir la realidad por esta geografía necesitamos cierto nivel de locura.
