Notes from a Prison./ Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

Hello, friends of #blackandwhite.

Last Wednesday, I returned for the second time to one of the most impressive places in Havana: the old Castillo del Príncipe prison.

I went with a group of friends who were working on a photography project, and I also took the opportunity to take some pictures. Whenever I go there, I feel something that is difficult to explain. From the moment you walk through the door, the atmosphere changes. There is silence, but it is not a normal silence. It feels heavy.

These snapshots 📸 are my submission for the #monomad challenge by @monochromes and @brumest.

Common criminals and political prisoners alike passed through those corridors. Beyond the stories that one may know, the place holds something. You can see it in the walls, in the cells, in the lack of light.

The punishment cells were what impressed me the most. They are small, closed, harsh. It's hard to imagine how long someone could spend in there.

And the graffiti... some of it looks recent. Messages left behind, like a way of saying "I was here."

It's a very interesting place for photography. The textures, shadows, and light coming in through small cracks make everything very powerful, especially in black and white.

I'll definitely be back with a clearer idea and a more thought-out project. For now, I'll share these images from my visit.

Hola amigos de #blackandwhite.

El miércoles pasado volví, por segunda vez, a uno de los lugares más impactantes de La Habana: la antigua prisión del Castillo del Príncipe.

Fui con un grupo de amigos que estaban trabajando en un proyecto fotográfico y yo también aproveché para hacer algunas imágenes. Siempre que entro allí siento algo difícil de explicar. Desde la puerta ya el ambiente cambia. Hay silencio, pero no es un silencio normal. Se siente pesado.

Por esos pasillos pasaron presos comunes y también presos políticos. Más allá de las historias que uno pueda conocer, el lugar guarda algo. Se nota en las paredes, en las celdas, en la falta de luz.

Las celdas de castigo fueron lo que más me impresionó. Son pequeñas, cerradas, duras. Cuesta imaginar cuánto tiempo pudo pasar alguien ahí dentro.

Y los grafitis… algunos parecen recientes. Mensajes que quedaron marcados, como una forma de decir “yo estuve aquí”.

Para la fotografía es un sitio muy interesante. Las texturas, las sombras y la luz que entra por pequeñas rendijas hacen que todo tenga mucha fuerza, sobre todo en blanco y negro.

Seguramente volveré con una idea más clara y un trabajo más pensado. Por ahora, les comparto estas imágenes de este recorrido.
