My nephew and his toys./ Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

“Uncle, why don't we do a photo shoot with my toys before you head out?” my nephew asks me as I grab my camera to leave. Well, it's impossible to say no to him. In no time, he had his toy cars all lined up and had even set up a little studio.

—Tío, ¿por qué no le hacemos una sesión de fotos a mis juguetes antes de que salgas a la calle? —me dice mi sobrino mientras agarro la cámara para salir. Y bueno, es imposible decirle que no. Rápido, ya tenía listos sus autos de juguete y hasta había preparado un pequeño estudio.

For children, toys hold great significance, but for a Cuban child, this takes on another dimension: toys are almost sacred objects; every little soldier, animal, or car has an almost spiritual meaning.

Para los niños, los juguetes tienen un gran significado, pero para un niño cubano esto toma otra dimensión: los juguetes son casi objetos sagrados, cada soldadito, animalito o auto tiene un significado casi espiritual.

In fact, they take on a strong emotional significance and are cherished for years to come.

De hecho, llegan a tener una fuerte carga emocional y se guardan con mucho cariño después de años.

“Uncle, but let's photograph even the broken cars—they have a right to be in the photos too,” he tells me.

—Tío, pero vamos a fotografiar hasta los autos destrozados, ellos también tienen derecho —me dice.

After several minutes of this, he tells me, “You can go to work now. When I get my own camera, I'll go out with you to take street photos!” And I'm happy.

Tras varios minutos en esta tarea, me dice: «Ya te puedes ir a trabajar. ¡Cuando tenga mi cámara saldré contigo para hacer fotos de calle!», y yo feliz.
