oday we continue with the second part of the series "Leaping into the void" —or perhaps it could also be called "Child's play?"—. It's about that dangerous game that some kids play on the coast of Havana. I know they take precautions, but it's still risky. Today I'm sharing some pictures so you can get a better idea of what I'm talking about.

oy continuamos con la segunda parte de la serie “Saltar al vacío” —o quizás también podría llamarse “¿Juego de niños?”—. Trata sobre esa diversión tan peligrosa que algunos chicos practican en la costa habanera. Sé que ellos toman sus precauciones, pero aun así no deja de ser algo arriesgado. Hoy les comparto algunas imágenes para que puedan hacerse una mejor idea de lo que hablo.

Organization and Brotherhood / Organización y hermandad

I spent quite a while near them, listening to them, watching how they organize themselves. I was impressed to see how they look out for each other: there is always one, usually the oldest, keeping an eye on the tide, possible dangers, and also the police.
Estuve un buen rato cerca de ellos, escuchándolos, observando cómo se organizan. Me impresionó ver cómo se cuidan entre ellos: siempre hay uno, generalmente el mayor, pendiente de la marea, de los posibles peligros y también de la policía.

Consequences and Family Dramas / Consecuencias y dramas familiares

And what happens if they get caught? Well, they are taken to the nearest station and from there their parents are called. Once I witnessed one of these little family dramas. Coincidentally, my sister lives nearby, and when the police show up, the situation gets pretty intense.
¿Y qué pasa si los atrapan? Pues los llevan a la estación más cercana y desde allí llaman a sus padres. Una vez pude presenciar uno de esos pequeños dramas familiares. Casualmente mi hermana vive cerca y, cuando la policía aparece, la situación se pone bastante intensa.

A Mother's Answer / La respuesta de una madre

At one point, I saw the mother of one of the boys arrive. I was surprised that she didn't seem alarm; rather, she gave the impression of observing the scene with a certain calm, even with a slight smile. Of course, I went over and asked her about it. Her answer left me speechless: "They have to prepare for life... and for the dangers of the street."
En un momento vi llegar a la madre de uno de los chicos. Me sorprendió que no parecía alarmada; más bien daba la impresión de que observaba la escena con cierta calma, incluso con una leve sonrisa. Por supuesto me acerqué y le pregunté. Su respuesta me dejó sin palabras: —Tienen que prepararse para la vida… y para el peligro de la calle.

Tension and Adrenaline / Tensión y adrenalina

I stood there for quite a while, somewhere between fascinated and concerned. I wondered what would happen if one of them miscalculated, or if the police showed up and everyone had to run away. It was a strange mixture of tension and adrenaline.
Me quedé allí bastante rato, entre fascinado y preocupado. Pensaba en qué pasaría si alguno calculaba mal, o si aparecía la policía y todos tenían que salir corriendo. Era una mezcla extraña de tensión y adrenalina.

Lessons in Perspective / Lecciones de perspectiva

In the end, I took the photos I wanted. Back home, looking at them more calmly, I felt that in some of them I would have liked to change the perspective a little. But hey, that's a lesson learned for next time.
Al final hice las fotos que quería. Ya en casa, mirándolas con más calma, sentí que en algunas me habría gustado cambiar un poco la perspectiva. Pero bueno, eso queda como aprendizaje para la próxima vez.

Siempre es un aprendizaje. El momento de la verdad apenas te da tiempo a pensar, y luego cuando te das cuenta en edición de lo que pudo ser y lo que en algún momento será... pero siempre de otra manera, claro.

Excelente crónica, y excelentes fotografías.
