It's hot in Havana./ Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

Greetings, dear friends of the #blackandwhite community. How’s everything going? Summers in Cuba are very hot—in many ways—but especially at midday, no one is out on the streets. That’s why some seek refuge in the sea. It’s not the best option for these kids—the spot is dangerous: it’s the so-called floating bridge in Havana Bay, or rather what’s left of it, since part of its structure has been stolen. The fact is, they went for a dip, so I went along to document it all.

Saludos, estimados amigos de la comunidad #blackandwhite. ¿Cómo va todo? Los veranos en Cuba son muy calurosos, en muchos sentidos, pero sobre todo a mediodía no hay quien esté en la calle. Por eso, algunos se refugian en el mar. No es la mejor opción para estos chicos, el lugar es peligroso: es el llamado puente flotante de la bahía de La Habana, o más bien lo que queda de él, porque le han robado parte de su estructura. El caso es que fueron a darse un chapuzón, así que yo fui para documentarlo todo.

The fishermen say that sharks are spotted there from time to time. In fact, this bay was full of them in the 1940s and 1950s, but later, due to pollution, it became harder to spot them.

Dicen los pescadores que por allí se deja ver algún tiburón de vez en cuando. De hecho, esta bahía estuvo llena de ellos en las décadas de los 40 y 50, pero después, debido a la contaminación, era más difícil verlos.

But this doesn’t intimidate these kids, who are determined to cool off and hang out.

Pero esto no intimida a estos chicos, decididos a refrescarse y pasar el rato.

At first, they aren’t too keen on the idea of me photographing them. “Times are tough,” one tells me, “and we don’t want any trouble.” It takes time to earn everyone’s trust.

Al principio no les gusta mucho la idea de que los fotografíe, «es que los tiempos son malos», me dice uno, «y no queremos problemas». Lleva su tiempo ganarse la confianza de todos.

I hope the city government arranges some transportation to take them to the beach to prevent accidents here, but honestly, I think that’s very unlikely.

Ojalá el gobierno de la ciudad gestione algún transporte que los lleve a la playa para evitar accidentes en este lugar, pero la verdad es que lo veo muy improbable.
