Houses, Time, and Many Stories./Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

All the houses in Cuba look alike, and when I say they look alike, I mean that in any town in the country—whether in the central, western, or eastern region—you'll see that the houses look practically the same. However, there's one area in summertime Havana where the houses are very different.

Todas las casas de Cuba se parecen, y cuando digo que se parecen, me refiero a que, en cualquier pueblo del país, ya sea de la región central, occidental u oriental, uno verá que las casas tienen prácticamente la misma apariencia. No obstante, hay una zona en el verano habanero donde las casas son muy diferentes.

I remember that, as a child, my father would take me to my aunt's house, which was located there, and I was always amazed by the beauty and grandeur of those houses, which in their day were practically palaces.

Recuerdo que, de niño, mi padre me llevaba a casa de mi tía, que vivía en ese lugar, y siempre me quedaba atónito ante la belleza y lo grande de aquellas casas, que en su época fueron prácticamente un palacio.

And yet there's a lot of history in each one of them. Some belonged to prominent figures from the Republican era: writers, artists, politicians… And, after so many years, they're still very well preserved.

Y eso que hay mucha historia en cada una de ellas. Algunas pertenecieron a grandes personajes de la época republicana: escritores, artistas, políticos... Y, después de tantos años, todavía se conservan muy bien.

I remember that when I was seven, my father once took me to the home of a friend of his who lived in one of these houses, and I was practically scared out of my wits. I was terrified to go inside and walk through those hallways, which almost looked like mirrors. Seeing the stained-glass windows, the windows, the ceilings adorned with works of art… It was wonderful for such a young child. Even today, 38 years later, I remember that day perfectly.

Yo me acuerdo de que, con siete años, mi padre me llevó una vez a casa de un amigo suyo que vivía en una de estas casas y yo prácticamente morí de susto. Me daba mucho miedo entrar y caminar por aquellos pasillos, que casi parecían espejos. Ver los vitrales, las ventanas, los techos ornamentados con obras de arte... Aquello era maravilloso para un niño tan pequeño. Aun hoy, 38 años después, recuerdo perfectamente aquel día.

The thing is, strolling through these parts of the city becomes a treat, a feast for the eyes, because you walk through areas of Centro Habana, where the passage of time has left practically nothing but ruins, and when you reach Vedado and see these mansions, you delight in gazing at them.

Es que pasear por estas zonas de la ciudad se convierte en un aliciente, un bálsamo para la vista, porque caminas por las zonas de Centro Habana, donde el paso del tiempo ha dejado ruinas prácticamente, y cuando llegas al Vedado y ves estas mansiones, te deleitas contemplándolas.

Not all of them, however, have fared the same. Many are in worse condition than those in Centro Habana—practically in ruins—because they were mansions, impressive homes that, in '59, were given as housing to many families who hadn't built them and who, over time, destroyed them.

Ahora no todas corrieron la misma suerte. Muchas de ellas están en peores condiciones que las de Centro Habana, prácticamente en ruinas, porque eran mansiones, casas impresionantes que, en el año 59, se dieron como vivienda a muchas familias que no las habían construido y que, con el paso del tiempo, las destruyeron.

That's why I wanted to show you these houses, which even today, after so many years, still retain the beauty of their early days.
