From a fishing village, its boats.[Eng/Esp]

Baracoa River, Artemisa Province, Cuba; in the 1990s, many boats set out from here to cross the Florida Straits, carrying Cubans seeking a better future. I remember as a child walking along the riverbank and seeing dozens of fishing boats—a breathtaking sight; today, only a few of them remain. But they stand there as witnesses to time, and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Río Baracoa, provincia de Artemisa, Cuba; desde aquí salieron en la década del 90 muchas embarcaciones para cruzar el estrecho de la Florida con cubanos buscando un mejor futuro. Recuerdo de niño caminar por la orilla del río y ver decenas de botes de pescadores, un paisaje impresionante; hoy, solo quedan pocos de ellos. Pero allí están testigos en el tiempo, y por muchos años más.

Owning a boat means having a steady income from fishing, which is why their owners are very protective of them—and boy, was I too.

Tener un bote significa tener una buena entrada de dinero producto de la pesca, por eso sus dueños son muy celosos con ellos; vaya que yo también lo fuera.

The time will come—at the rate we’re going—when not a single one will remain, and the river will look desolate and sad; I hope that scenario is delayed. For now, I’m documenting them to enrich my province’s historical memory.

Llegará el momento; al paso que vamos, no quedará ni uno, y el río se verá desolado y triste; espero demore tal escenario. Por lo pronto, voy documentando y así enriquecer la memoria histórica de mi provincia.
