T here’s a reality I can’t ignore, no matter how hard I try, every time I step outside: children and teenagers who are going down the wrong path. I don’t want to generalize, because that wouldn’t be fair, but every day I see more and more school-age kids who should be in class but are instead roaming the city getting into trouble. That’s what today’s series is about. Take a look.	H ay una realidad que no puedo obviar, por más que lo intente, cada vez que salgo a la calle: los niños y adolescentes que van por malos caminos. No quisiera generalizar, porque no sería justo, pero cada día encuentro más casos de jóvenes en edad escolar que deberían estar en clases y, sin embargo, andan por la ciudad metiéndose en problemas. De eso trata la serie de hoy. Les muestro.

My intention is always to do street photography, but when I come across situations like this, I can’t help but worry. Some even carry knives and show them off proudly. Honestly, it’s quite disturbing.	Mi intención siempre es hacer fotografía callejera, pero cuando me topo con situaciones así, no puedo evitar preocuparme. Algunos incluso andan con armas blancas y las muestran con orgullo. La verdad, es algo que inquieta bastante.

These kids, for example, were jumping over a hotel fence to steal belongings from guests who were at the pool. All in broad daylight. And the most shocking thing is that some adults who witnessed the scene almost found it amusing.	Estos chicos, por ejemplo, se dedicaban a saltar la reja de un hotel para robar pertenencias a los huéspedes que estaban en la piscina. Todo a plena luz del día. Y lo más chocante es que algunos adultos que presenciaban la escena lo tomaban casi como una gracia.

There comes a point where you become predisposed to it. After seeing so many things, even in a simple photo where I just wanted to play with shadows, I found myself thinking: what were those two children doing alone in a place like that, so exposed?	Llega un punto en que uno se predispone. Después de ver tantas cosas, incluso en una foto sencilla, donde solo quería jugar con sombras, ya me encontraba pensando: ¿qué hacían aquellos dos niños solos en un lugar así, tan expuesto?

About ten years ago, this kind of situation wasn’t seen as often on the streets of Havana. Today, however, they seem to be part of the routine.	Hace unos diez años, este tipo de situaciones no se veían con tanta frecuencia en las calles de La Habana. Hoy, en cambio, parecen formar parte de la rutina.

Honestly, I don’t know where we’re headed. I want to believe in a better future—I really do. In the meantime, I keep documenting this reality, camera in hand, hoping that one day things will change.	La verdad, no sé hacia dónde vamos a parar. Quiero creer en un futuro mejor, de verdad. Mientras tanto, sigo documentando esta realidad, cámara en mano, con la esperanza de que algún día las cosas cambien.

Está es la verdadera realidad, aunque sea bien cruda, pero realidad al fin. A los turistas les venden una imagen distinta, de niños bien atendiendos, de un Estado preocupado por la niñez, de padres obligados a velar por los menores, por los jóvenes, por los ancianos, especulando de tener Leyes para proteger a los más vulnerables, todo una gran mentira, estás fotos muestran parte de una verdad que es aún mucho más dura. El futuro de nuestra patria pinta negro, si no se actúa a tiempo.
