Empathy, observation, and a photographic eye./ Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

If I had to name three important aspects of my career that street photography has given me, they would be the following: empathy, observation, and photographic vision.

Si tuviera que mencionar tres aspectos importantes de mi carrera que me ha aportado la fotografía callejera, serían los siguientes: empatía, observación y visión fotográfica.

Empathy is essential in this practice: you have to connect with people—not just be a spectator, but become part of the social dynamics unfolding on the streets.

La empatía es fundamental en este ejercicio: hay que llegar a la gente, no ser un espectador, sino formar parte de la dinámica social que se desarrolla en las calles.

There are more photos I don’t take than those I bring home, and often the best ones are the ones I didn’t take—but that will remain etched in my memory.

Son más las fotos que no hago que las que me llevo a casa y, muchas veces, las mejores son aquellas que no hice, pero que quedarán grabadas en mi memoria.

The power of observation is crucial: you have to sit back and decipher what’s happening around you—the context.

El poder de la observación es crucial: hay que sentarse y descifrar qué sucede a tu alrededor, el contexto.

Ultimately, as a result of these three elements, my photographic vision—which is so essential—is honed, and I acquire skills that aren’t taught in schools, but are only discovered by being out on the street.

Al final, como producto de estos tres elementos, se entrena mi visión fotográfica, tan fundamental, y se adquieren habilidades que no enseñan en las escuelas, que solo se descubren estando en la calle.
