City Animals and Their Stories./ Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

Greetings, friends of Hive:

I believe that going for a walk around the city is always an adventure, and there is one thing that almost never fails to happen: I encounter animals on the street. Some, like cats and dogs, have been abandoned to fend for themselves, while others, like certain species of birds, have adapted perfectly to city life. And to be honest... just seeing them is enough for me to drop whatever I'm doing and give them my full attention. Today I want to share some photos of these stray animals with you.

Considero que salir a caminar por la ciudad siempre es una aventura, ahora, hay algo que casi nunca falla: encontrarme con animales en la calle. Algunos, como gatos y perros, que fueron abandonados a su suerte, y otros, como ciertas especies de aves, que ya se han adaptado perfectamente a la vida citadina. Y en honor a la verdad... basta con que los vea para que suelte lo que esté haciendo y les preste toda mi atención. Hoy quiero compartirles algunas fotos de esos animalitos callejeros.

As soon as he saw me with the camera, the man approached me and, without thinking twice, asked me to take a photo of his dog. His name is Muñeco, he told me proudly, he is three years old and he is a beast. He told me the whole story of how he picked him up on the street and how they have been inseparable ever since. Of course, he confessed with a laugh, when he sees a female dog, he forgets the world and runs after her. He's a hopeless romantic.

Nada más verme con la cámara, el hombre se acercó y sin pensarlo dos veces me pidió una foto para su perro. Se llama Muñeco, me dijo con orgullo, tiene tres años y es una fiera. Me contó toda la historia de cómo lo recogió en la calle y desde entonces se volvieron inseparables. Eso sí —me confesó riéndose—, cuando ve una perrita se le olvida el mundo y se lanza detrás, un romántico empedernido.

Cats... there are all kinds. Some are affectionate: you make a noise and they come right away, as if they've known you all their lives. But there are others who give you the cold shoulder, as if they're annoyed that you're pointing a camera at them. Not to mention posing.

Los gatos... hay de todo tipo. Algunos son cariñosos: les haces un ruido y vienen enseguida, como si te conocieran de toda la vida. Pero hay otros que, hasta cara de pocos amigos te ponen, como si les molestara que les apunten con la cámara. Ya ni hablar de posar.

These pigeons are everywhere; they are undoubtedly the most abundant birds in the city. They have adapted so well that they are now considered an invasive species. They are gradually displacing other birds that also live here. But even so, they are beautiful.

Estas palomas se ven por todos lados, son, sin duda, las más abundantes en la ciudad. Se han adaptado tanto que ya hasta se consideran una especie invasora. Van desplazando poco a poco a otras aves que también habitan por aquí. Pero, aún así, son bellas.

Not all cats that roam the streets are abandoned. Many have homes, food, and even names, but spend their days wandering around. Curious creatures, like this one that wouldn't stop staring at me. It came so close that it seemed like it wanted to say something. Or maybe it was just deciding whether to jump on the lens or continue on its way.

No todos los gatos que andan por la calle están abandonados. Hay muchos que tienen casa, comida, y hasta nombre, pero pasan el día callejeando. Curiosos al fin, como este que no dejaba de mirarme. Se me acercó tanto que parecía querer decir algo. O tal vez solo estaba decidiendo si subirse al lente o seguir su camino.

There are streets where cats are not welcome. This dog I met stands guard 24 hours a day. As soon as he sees a cat, a conflict breaks out right there.

Hay calles donde los gatos no son bienvenidos. Este perro que conocí, monta guardia las 24 horas. Apenas ve un gato, allí mismo se forma el conflicto.

Now, what I like most about these outings isn't just the photos. It's also hearing people's stories. When they talk to me about their pets, you can see their passion, their love, their deep connection. And that, for me, is worth as much as the best image: the moment when people open up and tell you how an animal changed their lives, keeps them company, or simply makes them smile amid the existential chaos of today's world.

Ahora, lo que más me gusta de estas salidas no son solamente las fotos. Es también escuchar las historias de la gente. Cuando me hablan de sus mascotas, se les nota la pasión, el cariño, la conexión profunda. Y eso, para mí, vale tanto como la mejor imagen: el momento donde las personas se abren y te cuentan cómo un animal cambió sus vidas, les hace compañía, o simplemente les saca una sonrisa en medio del caos existencial que se vive hoy en día.
