Chronicle of a Street Photographer. / Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

I spend most of my time in these hallways whenever I'm in Havana; it's my sister's house, and that's where I get ready to take photos before heading out onto the street.

En estos pasillos paso la mayor parte de mi tiempo cada vez que estoy en La Habana; es la casa de mi hermana, y desde allí hago mis preparativos fotográficos antes de salir a la calle.

Lately, though, I've been fascinated by everything you can find and observe in a "solar" in Centro Habana. And when I say "solar," I'm referring to those multi-family dwellings that are over a hundred years old and are currently home to a large number of people.

No obstante, últimamente me ha fascinado todo lo que se puede encontrar y observar en un solar de Centro Habana. Y cuando hablo de solar, me refiero a esas viviendas multifamiliares que tienen más de cien años y en las que convive actualmente un gran número de personas.

In a previous post, I'd already mentioned everything you can see from that vantage point: weathered walls, the passage of time—which is relentless on these buildings—yet they still resist dying or collapsing, fighting against the force of gravity while leaving the marks of time on their walls.

En una publicación anterior ya había comentado todo lo que se observa desde ese lugar: paredes desgastadas, el paso del tiempo, que es implacable con estas edificaciones, pero que aún así se resisten a morir, a caer, luchando contra la fuerza de la gravedad, pero dejando en sus paredes las huellas del tiempo.

When you climb up to the rooftop of one of these buildings, there's one element that stands out a bit from the landscape blending into the horizon: the TV antennas. What do TV antennas have to do with it? Why are they so important? Let me explain.

Cuando subes a la azotea de una de estas edificaciones, hay un elemento que disocia un poco el paisaje que se mezcla en el horizonte: las antenas de televisión. ¿Qué tiene que ver la antena de televisión? ¿Por qué es tan importante? Les cuento.

In Cuba, we have approximately nine TV channels, four of which broadcast practically the same content, but it wasn't always that way. There was a time when there were only four channels. That's why I remember, as a child, being fascinated whenever U.S. television channels—mainly from the Florida area—popped up on my TV.

En Cuba tenemos aproximadamente nueve canales de televisión, cuatro de los cuales prácticamente transmiten el mismo contenido, pero no siempre fue así. Hubo un momento en que solo existían cuatro canales. Por eso, yo recuerdo que, de niño, me fascinaba cuando entraban canales de televisión de Estados Unidos, principalmente del área de Florida, en mi televisor.

You practically had to be a magician to gain access to one of these channels. In Cuba, foreign television was completely banned, and installing antennas capable of picking up those signals was punishable by law.

Había que ser prácticamente mago para poder tener acceso a uno de estos canales. En Cuba, la televisión extranjera estaba completamente prohibida y se castigaba con la ley la instalación de antenas que pudieran captarlos.

That's why, even though many years have passed, people still climb onto the roofs of their houses, and there's a big difference between one antenna and another. They're remnants of what used to be the longing to reach something unattainable. That's why I wanted to put out this post—because it's one of the most visible features when we're in Havana or any other city in Cuba.

De ahí que, aunque hayan pasado muchos años, todavía se suba al techo de las casas y haya una gran diferencia entre una antena y otra. Son restos de lo que fueron las ansias por alcanzar algo inalcanzable. Por eso he querido sacar esta publicación, porque es uno de los elementos más visibles cuando estamos en La Habana, o en cualquier ciudad de Cuba.

So we made do as best we could. I remember leaving school to look for aluminum rods to try to build an antenna that would let us watch at least a cartoon or a movie. And as the years went by, the custom of building antennas took root in the Cuban collective consciousness.

Por eso, nosotros resolvíamos como podíamos. Recuerdo que salíamos de la escuela buscando varillas de aluminio para intentar construir alguna antena que nos permitiera ver, al menos, algún dibujo animado o película. Y así pasaron los años y la costumbre de construir antenas se fue arraigando en el ideario popular cubano.
