Hello friends,

Children have not been a subject I have photographed much. Not because of a lack of interest—I worked for many years as a history teacher in a secondary school and have always felt a special connection with them—but because it is too complex a social issue in the country where I live.

On my walks, I increasingly encounter children doing things that should not be part of childhood: some working, others running errands, most sent by their own parents.

They live in a kind of limbo. Present, yet absent from what should be a healthy, carefree childhood.

Others have fun in their own way. Perhaps I am from another generation and there are things I don't fully understand. Maybe childhood has also changed, like everything else.

I am just an observer. I try to look at the reality around me as honestly as possible. But when it comes to children on the street, I cannot help but be deeply affected.

I know it's a social phenomenon present in many countries. However, here it wasn't something we were used to. And that makes it even harder to accept.

Sometimes I stop to talk to them. I try to understand their looks, their gestures, what they say and what they don't say. Just by looking into their eyes, you can tell that there are stories there that are not always told.

It's a subject I'm still processing. In the meantime, it's part of my photographic discourse: a harsh reality, but a real one.

Hola amigos

Los niños no han sido un tema que haya fotografiado mucho. No por falta de interés —trabajé muchos años como profesor de Historia en una secundaria y siempre he sentido una conexión especial con ellos—, sino porque es un asunto social demasiado complejo en el país donde vivo.

En mis caminatas cada vez encuentro más niños haciendo cosas que no deberían ser parte de una infancia: algunos trabajando, otros pidiendo mandados, la mayoría enviados por sus propios padres.

Viven como en una especie de limbo. Presentes, pero a la vez ausentes de lo que debería ser una infancia sana, despreocupada.

Otros se divierten a su manera. Quizás soy de otra generación y hay cosas que no termino de comprender del todo. Tal vez la infancia también ha cambiado, como todo.

Yo solo soy un observador. Intento mirar la realidad que me rodea con la mayor honestidad posible. Pero cuando se trata de niños en la calle, no puedo evitar que me afecte profundamente.

Sé que es un fenómeno social presente en muchos países. Sin embargo, aquí no era algo a lo que estuviéramos acostumbrados. Y eso lo hace aún más difícil de asimilar.

A veces me detengo a conversar con ellos. Intento comprender sus miradas, sus gestos, lo que dicen y lo que callan. Basta mirar sus ojos para entender que allí hay historias que no siempre se cuentan.

Es un tema que todavía estoy procesando. Mientras tanto, forma parte de mi discurso fotográfico: una realidad dura, pero real.
