After more than 30 hours without electricity—with all the stress that entails—you can hear people shouting with joy when the power comes back on. Suddenly, that absolute darkness and those empty streets begin to transform, and tensions ease. That’s when my nephew says to me, “Come on, uncle, take some pictures now that the power’s back on,” and, well, saying no to a kid isn’t an option.

De pronto, esa oscuridad así absoluta y calles vacías se va transformando y bajando las tensiones. Ahí es cuando mi sobrino me dice: "Dale, tío, haz fotos ahora que vino la corriente, y bueno, decirle que no al niño no es una opción.

This neighborhood in Havana is unique; in fact, when it’s pitch black, it’s very dangerous to walk its streets, which is why I ventured out to take the photos from the balcony and the rooftop. Well, that’s all I had to share with the community—a little piece of my city that will one day regain the beauty of days gone by.

Este barrio de La Habana es excepcional; de hecho, cuando está a oscuras, es muy peligroso caminar por sus calles, por eso me aventuré a hacer las fotos desde el balcón y la azotea. Pues nada, es lo que tenía para compartir con la comunidad, un pedacito de mi ciudad que algún día volverá a tener la belleza de tiempos pasados.
