T here’s something that always catches my attention when I’m out on the street: the wisdom that older people carry with them. A lifetime of experiences, stories, and hardships, too. And that, honestly, fascinates me.	H ay algo que siempre me llama la atención cuando salgo a la calle: la sabiduría que cargan las personas de la tercera edad. Toda una vida de experiencias, de historias, de golpes también. Y eso, la verdad, me resulta fascinante.

That’s why I enjoy sitting down to talk with them so much… though it also breaks my heart when I see them in poor health. I recently wrote a post on this topic, and today I’m returning to it. Cuba is one of the nations with the oldest populations in the world, and you can feel that on the street.	Por eso disfruto tanto sentarme a conversar con ellos… aunque también me duele cuando los encuentro en malas condiciones. Hace poco hice un post sobre este tema y hoy vuelvo a él. Cuba es una de las naciones con la población más envejecida del mundo, y eso se siente en la calle.

_{Solitude in the city / La soledad en la ciudad}

There are fewer and fewer young people. Many have left in search of a better future, leaving behind an older population that, in many cases, lives quite alone. It’s something I see almost every day as I walk through the city.	Cada vez hay menos jóvenes. Muchos se han ido buscando un mejor futuro, y ha quedado una población mayor que, en muchos casos, vive bastante sola. Es algo que veo casi a diario mientras camino por la ciudad.

Sometimes I sit down with an elderly person to chat. They tell me about their lives, about what they’ve been through… and the truth is, those moments are truly beautiful. I enjoy them, and I think they do too.	A veces me siento con algún viejito a conversar. Me cuentan de su vida, de lo que han vivido… y la verdad es que esos momentos son muy bonitos. Yo los disfruto, y creo que ellos también.

_{Memories of my grandparents / El recuerdo de los abuelos}

I always try to listen to them carefully. They remind me so much of my grandparents, of when they used to take me to the park to play as a child. Those are memories I cherish deeply.	Siempre trato de escucharlos con atención. Me recuerdan mucho a mis abuelos, a cuando de niño me llevaban al parque a jugar. Son recuerdos que guardo con mucho cariño.

_{More than just images / Más que imágenes}

That’s why, every time I photograph them, I try to make sure these aren’t just images, but also a way to draw attention to the need to care for our elderly.	Por eso, cada vez que los fotografío, intento que no sean solo imágenes, sino también una forma de llamar la atención sobre la necesidad de cuidar a nuestros ancianos.

Though some times, older people can be somewhat hard to understand, it's very important to be able to respect and understand. They are not just "that old man," rather, they are very experienced. However, in other to gain from their experience, young people should be willing to tolerate the bad smell of their mouths..
