Who says street photography can't be fun? Sure, you have to walk for hours under the sun, go hungry because there's nothing to eat, carry light gear so you don't break your back, and stay alert so you don't get mugged and lose your equipment. But even so, believe me, it's a unique experience. "Hey, but you're contradicting yourself!" No, let me explain: I'm talking about all those things that happen while you're taking photos and end up making you smile, either in the moment or later, but which make the experience much more bearable.

I often think that no one is watching me, but there is always an eye—or two, or three—on you. All you have to do is raise your camera and someone immediately appears at your side asking, "Are you a journalist? What country are you from? Do you need a taxi? Are you a police officer?"

And of course, there are also the "street scientists," who always have an explanation for everything. Something funny happened to me with this photo, for example. A lady said to me, "Hey, you can't fly drones here!" And I thought, yes, ma'am, I saw that on the sign. Then she said, "Do you want to buy a drone? They're selling them."

Not to mention cats, which are irresistible to photograph. Sometimes they pose, sometimes they don't. One in particular was ignoring me, and I said, "Come on, kitty, get in the light!" Just then, the owner came out with a stick and yelled, "Listen to the foreign photographer, he wants to take your picture for Facebook, you ^#%@*!! cat."

Another thing that really amuses me is when people see me taking pictures of a place and suddenly they start looking too, as if trying to figure out what I'm looking at. They look at me with a face that says, "What is this guy doing?"

Of course, in Cuba there is a kind of collective fear of being discovered. Not because we are doing anything wrong, but because it is in our blood. All I have to do is sit down in a slightly suspicious manner to photograph a reflection and the neighbors immediately hide, put away their valuables, or disappear. In this photo, for example, there was a warehouse nearby, and as soon as I raised my camera, everyone vanished. What were they doing?

Cubans have a unique idiosyncrasy: we are more curious than cats, we love mystery, and when it comes to good humor, we are champions, even laughing at our own problems. That's why with this post I just wanted to add something different, sharing a couple of funny anecdotes that have happened to me while wandering the streets.

¿Qué tal todo, amigos de #blackandwhite?

¿Quién dice que hacer fotografía callejera no puede ser divertido? A ver, claro que hay que caminar horas bajo el sol, pasar hambre porque no aparece nada para comer, cargar poco para no reventarse la espalda y, además, estar atento para que no te asalten y te dejen sin equipo. Pero aun así, créanme, es una experiencia única. —¡Oye, pero te contradices!— No, les explico: lo digo por todas esas cosas que pasan mientras uno hace fotos y terminan sacándote una sonrisa, ya sea en el momento o después, pero que hacen la experiencia mucho más llevadera.
¿No me creen? Ya les cuento…
Muchas veces pienso que nadie me está mirando, pero siempre hay un ojo —o dos, o tres— puesto en ti. Basta con levantar la cámara y enseguida aparece alguien al lado preguntando: “¿Eres periodista? ¿De qué país vienes? ¿Necesitas un taxi? ¿Eres policía?”.
Y claro, están también los “científicos de la calle”, que siempre tienen una explicación para todo. Con esta foto, por ejemplo, me pasó algo curioso. Una señora me suelta: “¡Oye, que no se puede volar drones aquí!”. Y yo pensando: sí, señora, ya lo vi en el cartel. Acto seguido, me dice: “¿Quieres comprar un dron? Que los están vendiendo”.
Ni hablar de los gatos, que son irresistibles para retratar. A veces posan, otras no. Uno en particular no me hacía caso y yo: “¡Vamos, gatico, ponte en la luz!”. En eso sale el dueño con un palo y le grita: “¡Hazle caso al fotógrafo extranjero, que quiere sacarte para Facebook, gato de ^#%@*!!”.
Otra cosa que me da mucha gracia es cuando la gente me ve fotografiando un lugar y de pronto se quedan mirando también, como tratando de descubrir qué estoy observando. Me miran con cara de: “¿Qué estará haciendo este?”.
Eso sí, en Cuba existe una especie de miedo colectivo a ser descubierto. No porque se esté haciendo algo malo, sino porque ya lo llevamos en la sangre. Basta que me siente de forma medio sospechosa para fotografiar un reflejo y los vecinos de al lado enseguida se esconden, guardan lo que tienen de valor o desaparecen. En esta foto, por ejemplo, había como un almacén cerca y apenas levanté la cámara, todos se esfumaron. ¿Qué estarían haciendo?
La idiosincrasia del cubano es única: nos puede más la curiosidad que al gato, el misterio nos encanta y, si de buen humor se trata, ahí somos campeones, hasta para reírnos de nuestros propios problemas. Por eso con esta publicación solo quise añadir algo diferente, contando un par de anécdotas graciosas que me han pasado mientras ando callejeando.
