The Green Mushroom

One of the most amazing things I saw on my travels around the region of Phuket was the beautiful view of the limestone karsts poking out of the turquoise waters of the sea.

It is really something to see these giant green mushrooms hovering over the waves when you are out on the water. They way they shoot upwards in such dramatic, sheer-sided shapes makes it easy to imagine that there is some sort of digital landmass rising from the ocean floor in front of you.

Of course, for the locals it is probably just another day, but for me, it was an unbelivable sight that really opened my eyes to seeing islands in a whole new light.

Phuket and the surrounding areas are famous for their karst topography, a geological formation that takes thousands of years to take shape. This happens when water eats away at the rock to create sheer-sided formations that rise like isolated islands from the sea. Subsequently, they are capped with lush greenery.
