WELCOME 🍄 FUNGI LOVERS

This article for todays Fungi Friday is a more or less direct sequel to an article about those ears shaped mushrooms i wrote some time ago, because i happen to be almost yelled at “shoot us, shoot us" from the side of the road where a bunch of those Judas Ears sat on a rather thin, about one meter high tree trunk not even trying to hide whatsoever.

So, it's a totally new group of ears, äh, mushrooms this time. Since they were such beautiful specimens and almost begging me to shoot them i took the time to do exactly that from all sides. By now i'm pretty sure that this fungi’s common name is Judas Ear or latin Auricularia Auricula-Judae. But as always, in case some of you recognizes this one and knows better feel free to correct me in the comments.

A little research about the Judas Ear mushroom

The *Judas Ear *mushroom, scientifically known as Auricularia auricula-judae, is edible and a fascinating fungus with some intriguing qualities. This peculiar mushroom got its name from the biblical story of Judas Iscariot, who hanged himself on an elder tree, and it is said that these mushrooms grow on the same type of tree, but i don’t know if the trunk i found them on was such a tree. It's also quite resilient and can be found growing not only on elder trees but also on other hardwoods across Asia and Europe. Many people are familiar with a close relative of the Judas ear from Chinese restaurants. The mushroom with the name Auricularia polytricha is misleadingly served as a "Chinese morel". However, the mushroom has nothing to do with the true morels. In East Asia, Auricularia polytricha is not only cultivated for cooking. It also plays an important role in Chinese medicine and naturopathy. For example, it is said to stimulate the immune system and stop bleeding. So next time you stumble upon this whimsically named fungi during your forest adventures or at your local market, consider giving it a try! Just make sure to cook it properly; i wouldn't want anyone experiencing any divine retribution for their culinary choices!

Here we have two shots with views from above looking at the top of the trunk with a few cute baby ears and one mushroom hidden inside the stem.

Enjoy three more shots from different sides of a smaller group on the side of the tree trunk. They really do resemble ears of some sort, not necessarily human, but definitely ears. I wonder what Judas Iscariot's ears must have looked like. In case you're wondering: The white specs on the ears, er mushrooms, are tiny ice crystals, because temperatures were below zero that day and yes, my fingers almost froze off in the conditions under which I took these photos. Yes, now would be the right time for an admiring comment. 😉
