National Museum: Angono Petroglyphs

Last time we visited the National Museum of Petroglyphs located in Angono.

The Angono Petroglyph is considered a highly cultural landmark because it is the oldest known work of art in the Philippines.
It is included in the list of the National Cultural Treasure of the country and the World Inventory of Rock Art.

It was also declared as one of the most imperiled historic sites in the world by the World Monuments Watch and the World Monuments Fund.

Human and animal-like figures are engraved on the rock wall made of volcanic tuff. These figures are considered the oldest known artworks in the Philippines, dating back to Circa 3,000 B.C.

How to get there?

Going to the Petroglyphs, we need to pass a man-made tunnel. The entrance fee is free both for adults and for kids. We walked a few minutes before reaching the site. We were then introduced by their staff to how Petroglyphs were discovered

PRESERVING THE PETROGLYPHS OF ANGONO-BINANGONAN, RIZAL AND HISTORY

It is a great find for the Philippines that the Province of Rizal (Angono-Binangonan) has preserved this type of prehistoric art. The Rockwall features 127 engraved human and animal sculptures that were most likely created in the late Neolithic, or around 3000 BC. These are the Philippines' oldest known pieces of art. Some of these inscriptions are already unidentifiable, and weathering may have made them so. However, these depict stylized human forms, frogs, and reptiles. The majority of the engravings are symbolic depictions that have to do with magic and healing.

In 1973, the National Museum of the Philippines designated the location as a National Cultural Treasure. It is also listed among the historic sites of the world and in the World Inventory of Rock Art, both from 1985.
