Hello Hive.

A cross section of our corn farm is almost ready for harvest.
The farm has been planted in batches since we have so many engagement.
It has never been an easy task to be able to manage mixed cropping .

While working on one crop the time for planting another catches up with us and we pause work with one in order to co time work on another.
While some crop have some proper time when the flourish well others can be planted continuously or multiple times within the year.

Such was the case with our corn.
While planting.
The work on groundnut farm caught up with us and we had to abandoned this one.
After working out the groundnuts farms we had then head back to continue, hence the corn farm was planted in batches.

It is almost time for the harvest of the first batch and guess what this will be sold out to market women for selling on the streets.

Usually at this time of the year, the rainfalls are on the high side and if you have some corn harvest like we do, preserving it through sun drying becomes a challenge since we barely see the sun due to heavy clouds and downpours.

The only preservation method we know for our maize is the Sun drying where hence we then store them in sacks for blending into corn flour for our meals. So does every farmer around here.

It will be a lot of suffering and the maize might eventually get bad if we try Sun drying at this time of the year.

Have you seen corn been roasted/ boiled and sold out in the street for eating fresh.
Well this is where they bought those corn for.

There is a specific price we sell each to them sometimes a corn roll is sold at 5pieces 400naira/$0.5 to the buyers and they can go ahead to sell each corn roll at 200naira /$0.3 per roll after adding all their other expenses of cooking or roasting it.
They make their profit and we also get some certain amount to sponsor other farm projects.

After the first corn harvest the place is still be used to replant late maize and guinea corn at the same spot. Hence cultivation is done once while planting is repeated in the same spot.

Farmers here do not grow cash crops that is why most people have been limited to making peanuts from farming.
The lands aren't ours and they cannot be totally sold out for farming purpose hence we lease these farms on yearly basis.
Growing cash crops have so many benefits in different ways but once you relocate to a state different from yours, it is difficult to find land space large enough to be bought for commercial farming purpose.

With the development in the farm, less than 4weeks from now you get to witness our corn harvest.

We have already harvested most our Maize plants more than a month ago since we planted rather early in the year but there's still a farmland or so left. I'm sure there would be pictures to mark your harvest?

It will be indeed hard to dry the corn during the rainy season when there's Inconsistent sunlight. I like eating freshly boiled corn but I've not seen ripe corn in the markets yet.
