Walking Old East London's Historic Sites
These are the Trinity Green Almshouses in Whitechapel. They are historic Grade I-listed almshouses which means they are of significant architectural importance and interest and are protected by law.
They are on the Mile End Road, London E1. Just a short walk from the Blind Beggar Pub and the London Hospital
We tend to think of public welfare as a modern idea but as these homes for seafarers and their families show it has been around a very long time.
Built in 1695 by the Corporation of Trinity House to house retired master mariners and their widows.
The surviving buildings surround a small green and chapel, and remain partly residential which is astonishing.
The plaque tells us about the founding of the almshouses.
It reads.
"28 decay’d Masters & Commanders of Ships or ye Widows of such"
They had a way with words. 😂👍
Below is the front entrance to the almshouses. With the garden gate entrance to the bottom right.
Just a few steps away from the almshouses is the statue of William Booth (1829-1912) founder of the Salvation Army.
Booth was a methodist preacher and would often be seen outside of pubs condemning the evils of alcohol.

The Salvation Army is still in existence today and still helping homeless and destitute people. It's unfortunate that these organisations still have work to do.
Walking East London's old streets takes us back to a time when not everyone was a selfish, self centred, egotistical narcissist.
These statues and almshouses remind us that there are still good people in this world.

I had to go and look up the Corporation of Trinity House - interesting that it was originally founded in Deptford Strand where the old naval and shipbuilding base was. My uncle worked for them, based in Cornwall, looking after lighthouses, I think. Fascinating that it is a charity.
Hi Shani, yes trinity house is still running the lighthouse systems in the UK. Alongside a host of other governmental things. It's one of those anachronistic organisations that seems to be everywhere and into everything.
Your uncle working for trinity in deptford is a part of it's history. Do you remember much about his time there?

I woke up bright and early I thought today will be the day when I share some screenshots of the truth
As many people have seen I've been called a spammer on Hive for sharing the truth about my situation

A lot of towns have almshouses that may still be used for social good. Society ought to look after those who struggle and a lot of rich people through history have used their wealth for good. That is why I have little empathy for those who just seem to hoard wealth. I also have issues with those who use religion to discriminate and I know the Sally Army has been accused of that. We are seeing other cases lately and that is tragic.
There is a whole network of almshouses all over Britain that are still in use today which is astonishing considering this is the 6th richest country on earth.
Philanthropy in the past was more commonly used to grease the gates of heaven for the wealthy.
The Sally Army are shocking the way they force the bible down people's throats before they will help anyone. Not very Christian in my view but then again Christianity seems to have lost all sense of what Christianity was supposed to be.
Evangelical preachers driving Ferraris doesn't make any sense to me.

I'd like to see more voluntary organizations. I trust them more than the bureaucratic government welfare machine. Here in the PNW, we have the Salvation Army, Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul, the Union Gospel Mission, and more. It's still never enough, though.
