Glamping in April?
It's been literally decades since we last slept under canvas. We decided to try out glamping in april in Dorset. I haven't flown my drone for ages and thought it would be a good time to get it in the air.
Whilst the sun shone beautifully in the daytime at night the temperature plummeted to below zero. It was almost unbearable to be honest.
The tents were on the top of the hill overlooking the caravan site in Bridport in Dorset and the drone was useful for getting an overview of the countryside, river and coastline. The plan was to go fossil hunting on this famous Jurassic coast. We walked down to the coastal area but access to the cliffs was limited due to potential rock falls.
Although the terrain appears quite flat the march up the hill from the car park was pretty steep.
So what is glamping about? Well the idea is simple. Glamorous Camping. You sleep in a tent but with all the modern conveniences. Shower, toilet cooking facilities TV etc. It was an experience for sure but you still need to have good weather especially at night when you are trying to sleep. I thought my nose was going to freeze.
It felt like a Bedouin tent in the daytime and arctic exploration at night.
Doing my Laurence of Arabia pose.
As you can see the tents are well equipped with everything including the kitchen sink.
I can't help but think and feel that this is a bit of a cop out. It's not like camping in the traditional sense and it's not like staying in a caravan or hotel.
It kinda fails on both fronts. In the daytime in summer this type of tent would be like an oven and at night in spring/autumn it is freezing.
I couldn't help but think of the millions of people who are forced to live like this in various parts of the world. For them it's not glamorous at all.
In recent years I have noticed that caravan holidays have become extremely expensive at the same time as caravans have shrunk in size. Bedrooms in caravans are almost impossible to use. There is no space either side of the bed to get in or out.
I first noticed this shrinkage accommodations in Europe last year. Eventually we started staying in hotels on the European tour. The caravans and chalets were just to small.
The tent was bigger but the heat and cold issues mean it's not an option for me.
Have you ever tried glamping? Have you noticed that caravans have gotten smaller and more expensive?
At least I got to fly the drone which was nice. 🤦♂️😂👍

I've never been glamping before and did camping once when I went to Machu Pichu, we camped at Aguas Calientes at the base of MP for fun, instead of staying at a hotel. Your glamping does seem to be stuck in the middle, the beds look really soft 🥴
Caravan holidays can get stupidly expensive during holidays, sometimes I do a last minute booking at the beginning or end of season and get a 4 day break for £50 which is a bargain if you ask me.
Yep caravan holidays got really expensive during the pandemic when no one could travel abroad and the prices haven't come down since then.
Going out of season has it's advantages but in the UK if you take school age kids or grandchildren during term time you can expect a £1000 fine.
Holiday companies have been exploiting this law for decades.
It's a false supply and demand situation created by the government.
Parents are being robbed in my view.
We did some last summer, and it was freezing at night... April.? forget it!
My nose was literally ice cold. I ended up wrapped up like a burrito. ❄😂👍

That is posh camping. The nearest I've been to that was a ready-erected tent with decent beds in France. I have spent hundreds of nights in tents over the years and I am not too bothered about doing more. I like a decent bed. I might consider glamping some time, but my other half really feels the cold.
Someone took a nice pic of our house with a drone the other day, but I'm not putting that on the public web. Those things have really developed with decent cameras.

Hi @steevc, I also did a lot of camping in my youth and when my kids were little. It was an adventure and we have fond memories of our trips.
Like you, these days we prefer a decent bed and the grandkids don't seem to be as hardy as we were. God I'm sounding ancient 😂🤦♂️
The drone is great for getting a different perspective on an area and in some ways it saves walking up and down hills etc.
The problem with drones is that it is difficult to find places to fly especially in the city's.
Thanks for the !BEER 🍻👍

Hello there, nice to see you in the group again!
I'm with you on the cold camping, been there, done that and prefer my own foam mattress bed support these days!
Hey @ksteem good to hear from you. I hear you on the comfort of tent beds. It was freezing at night.
As to posting I've had a long break from everything and needed a good rest. I'm gradually coming back to life.
It was great to get the drone flying again. It's almost impossible to fly in London these days unless you can find a covert take off location.
