Showcase Grand Downtown Calgary
This building used to house my favorite theater growing up; it was something unique compared to any other movie theater that I've been to. It had balconies and a classic style I'd really only seen on TV. It was housed in the historic Lougheed Block, which was built in 1912 by Sir James Alexander Lougheed when Calgary had a population of only 50,000 people. With the way everything has grown up around this, I am glad to say this amazing piece of architecture is still around today. It also used to be the home of Don's Hobby Shop, which is one of Calgary's premier costume shops, and also had an arcade on the other side, which was perfect for before and after movies. If I can think of the perfect Saturday afternoons as a kid, this place was a big part of it.
