Humboldt Penguins at the Calgary Zoo
Humboldt penguins are found along the Pacific coast of South America, with around 80% living in the protected areas of the northern Chilean regions, Atacama and Coquimbo. They are actually considered to be top predators on the west coasts of the continent. Feeding primarily on pelagic schooling fish, they are also known to consume cephalopods and crustaceans. Visual hunters who leave their islands for foraging after sunrise.
At the Calgary Zoo they live with several other species of penguins; they seem to always group together anytime I've seen them, with a little bit of intermingling with the other species. When I see all of these different groups of them together congregating, it reminds me of being in high school between classes and at lunch hour when you would group together and stand around with your friends.
