Big Horn Sheep at the Calgary Zoo

Big Horn sheep, also known as rams, can be found throughout the mountain regions of North America. As the snow melts and spring comes, their coats will become this lighter brown color that we see now, which can help them blend into the habitat, whereas in winter they are quite white to help camouflage themselves in the snow. The males will grow large horns that can weigh even more than the bones in their bodies. Males will also live in bachelor groups, while females will stay with their young until they come together during mating season.
