Edzná, a Mayan ruins in Campeche, Mexico

As I wrote in my previous blog, I came to this Mayan site with a French couple who came to work through a volunteer site called WorkAway. This couple is really good workers and we had a lot of really good memories working together. After working with them for a few days, they moved to Cancun, and we no longer worked together. However, the memories of working with them for a few days are good memories for my friends and me. To thank them for working with us, we came together to this Mayan site, Edzna, which is not accessible from within Campeche. It was a great memory for me to be able to have this magnificent site all to myself because there were not many tourists because of the inaccessibility from within Campeche and tourists had to come by tourist bus.

It was really a huge area and I remember staying at that site for about 3 hours. It was really hot that day and I drank all the water in the water bottle I had brought. There were no vending machines anywhere like in Japan, and I was so thirsty. The sun was really strong in Campeche, but that sun was really beautiful. The ruins of Edzna are truly vast, and the way the buildings were constructed over the centuries is distinguishable from one era to the next.

One of the most memorable parts of my visit to Edzna was the plaza, which was once a ball game site. I was moved by the fact that I was in the ruins, just imagining that people 1,000 years ago lived in a place not so different from today's people.

And now that I think about it, this trip was much needed alone time for me. The sun, spending time with my best friends and family, and forgetting everything were all important. I needed that time. So, as I look at these pictures and think back to that time, I feel nostalgic. I have really good memories.

The ruins of temples and buildings where priests once lived were beautifully decorated, unlike other settlements. I could imagine that the priests had a high status at that time and controlled people through their religion and other powers. Nowadays, the Mayan religion has been lost and Christianity strongly influences the country, but I felt like I saw the rise and fall of the country and its culture. The French couple seemed to be planning to do this Mexico trip together for about a month, and they said they wanted to make many good memories through this trip. The boyfriend secretly told us that he had decided to marry her. It is my dream to run a hostel that helps backpackers like them who travel with backpacks. It is a dream that I would like to realize someday. I want people from all over the world to come to Osaka and make many good memories in this land. I want to help them create memories that will last a lifetime, just like the ones I made in Campeche.
