When I think back to my days at Holy Family College in Oku Abak, Abak Local government area AkawIbom, Nigeria, there’s one book that always comes to mind when it comes to English grammar. That book is Contemporary English Grammar by J.D. Murthy. I started using it properly in JS3 and it stayed with me all the way through SS1 and SS2. It wasn’t the kind of book that made you excited at first glance, but it was reliable and became a part of our daily school life.

To be honest, English grammar wasn’t my favorite subject back then. Sometimes it felt like we were just memorizing rules for the sake of passing exams. But this book had a way of making grammar less frustrating. Murthy explained things in a way that was clear and straight to the point. The examples were very useful too. You could actually relate to them. They weren’t just random sentences. They felt like things you could hear in real conversations or write in your school essays.

What I liked most was how practical it was. It didn’t try to sound fancy or use big grammar terms to confuse you. It just gave you what you needed to know, one step at a time. I especially remember the sections on tenses. Past tense, present perfect, future continuous all those confusing names started making sense because of how the book broke them down. We would read some parts in class and laugh at a few awkward examples, but the truth is they helped us remember.

In SS1 and SS2, as we started getting serious with WAEC and NECO, the book became even more important. Our English teacher would often ask us to open a particular chapter and go through the examples. Sometimes we’d be given homework straight from the book. It was full of exercises, and even though some were repetitive, they drilled the rules into our heads. I remember how my own copy started getting rough around the edges. Some pages were nearly falling out from how much I used it.

One thing I appreciated was that the book didn’t assume you already had everything figured out. It didn’t speak to you like you were a native speaker. It was meant for students like us, learning English in Nigeria where it wasn’t our first language. That really made a difference. It spoke our level and helped us grow from there.

Even outside class, I found myself picking it up when I had to write speeches or essays for competitions. It became my go-to reference anytime I felt unsure about my sentence structure. Looking back now, I think it gave me more confidence in my writing and speaking. I didn’t have to doubt my grammar all the time. That confidence stayed with me.

Now that I’m studying History and International Studies at the university, I can still see how the lessons from that book are helping me. Writing papers, preparing for presentations, or just communicating clearly grammar is everywhere, and I’m glad I had a solid foundation from those secondary school years.

In the end, Contemporary English Grammar by J.D. Murthy might not have been the most exciting book, but it did what it needed to do. It taught us how to use English correctly, and it stuck with us. For me, it was more than a school book. It was part of the journey of becoming confident in a language that wasn’t mine from birth. And for that, I’ll always be thankful.

Cuando pienso en mis años en Holy Family College en Oku Abak, hay un libro que nunca puedo olvidar, especialmente cuando se trata de gramática inglesa. Ese libro es Contemporary English Grammar de J.D. Murthy. Empecé a usarlo en JS3 y me acompañó hasta SS1 y SS2. Al principio no parecía un libro emocionante, pero terminó siendo uno de los más útiles y constantes durante mi tiempo en la secundaria.

La verdad es que la gramática inglesa no era mi materia favorita. A veces parecía que solo memorizábamos reglas para pasar exámenes. Pero este libro tenía una forma de hacer que las cosas no se sintieran tan pesadas. Murthy explicaba cada tema de forma directa y sencilla. Los ejemplos eran muy claros. No eran oraciones sin sentido, sino frases que podrías usar en la vida real o incluir en una redacción.

Lo que más me gustaba era lo práctico que era el libro. No intentaba sonar complicado ni usaba palabras difíciles solo para impresionar. Todo lo explicaba paso a paso. Recuerdo muy bien las partes sobre los tiempos verbales. Tiempos como el pasado simple, el presente perfecto y el futuro continuo dejaron de parecer tan confusos. Leíamos algunos ejemplos en clase y a veces nos reíamos de lo raras que sonaban ciertas frases, pero esas frases nos ayudaban a entender y recordar.

En SS1 y SS2, cuando los exámenes de WAEC y NECO empezaron a acercarse, el libro se volvió aún más importante. Nuestro profesor de inglés siempre nos pedía que abriéramos ciertos capítulos para revisar los ejemplos o hacer los ejercicios. Nos daba tareas del libro y, aunque algunos ejercicios eran repetitivos, realmente funcionaban. Me acuerdo que mi copia del libro ya estaba toda doblada y desgastada de tanto usarla.

Una cosa que siempre valoré fue que el libro no daba por hecho que ya supiéramos inglés perfecto. No te hablaba como si fueras nativo. Estaba hecho para estudiantes como nosotros, que aprendíamos inglés como segunda lengua en Nigeria. Eso ayudaba bastante. Sentías que el libro te entendía, que sabía por dónde empezar contigo.

Incluso fuera de clase, yo usaba el libro cuando tenía que escribir ensayos, discursos o participar en concursos. Se volvió mi libro de confianza. Me ayudaba a corregir mis errores y a sentirme más seguro. Hoy en día, todavía aplico muchas de las cosas que aprendí en ese libro. En la universidad, donde estudio Historia y Estudios Internacionales, necesito escribir ensayos bien estructurados y hablar con claridad. La gramática sigue siendo parte de todo eso, y me alegra haber tenido una base sólida desde la secundaria.

En resumen, Contemporary English Grammar de J.D. Murthy no será el libro más divertido del mundo, pero cumplió con su propósito. Nos enseñó a usar bien el inglés y se quedó con nosotros. Para mí, fue más que un simple texto escolar. Fue una herramienta que me ayudó a tener confianza en un idioma que no era el mío desde nacimiento. Y por eso, siempre le tendré un cariño especial.
