A Sunday in the Adler Botanical Garden

"Any trip is a holiday that will forever remain in your memory" — someone

This past Sunday, we decided to take a break from our usual beach routine and explore somewhere we had never been before: the Adler Botanical Garden. Despite having visited Sochi multiple times, somehow we had never made our way to this green corner of the city. As it turns out, that was a mistake — because the garden is nothing short of magical.

From the moment we stepped through the gates, it felt like we were being transported somewhere else entirely. The air was cooler, softer, and carried with it the scent of pine, damp earth, and blooming flowers. It was our first time here, and we weren’t prepared for just how big and diverse the space would be. Wide, shaded paths wound their way through landscaped sections, each representing different parts of the world. The further we walked, the more we were drawn into its peaceful charm.

At the heart of the garden stood a 19th-century manor house, built in the style of a French villa — the kind you might find tucked away in the hills above the Côte d’Azur. Pale stone walls, green shutters, and a tiled roof glowing under the afternoon sun. It had an air of old-world elegance, quiet and timeless. We paused on the terrace to take it all in, imagining the kind of life once lived behind those tall windows.

Surrounding the house was a rich collection of flora from all over the world. Each section of the garden was like a miniature continent. We passed towering American pine trees, their long needles swaying in the breeze like flags. Then came a grove of Asian bamboo, tall and graceful, creating a whispering corridor that felt straight out of a temple garden in Kyoto. Nearby, the vibrant yellow blossoms of mimosa trees seemed to glow in the sunlight, attracting butterflies and bees.

We wandered slowly, stopping often to read the little plaques with names and origins of plants. It felt like a geography lesson taught by nature itself. The garden was well maintained but still allowed to feel wild in the best way — not over-pruned or too polished, but alive and breathing.

One of the most unexpected delights was the aviary, tucked into a quieter section of the grounds. Inside, exotic birds filled the air with color and song. We watched toucans with their giant orange beaks hop from branch to branch, while a pair of parrots chattered away in the corner, clearly gossiping about the visitors. There were peacocks strutting about with full displays of feathers, and small birds from Africa and South America flitting through the leaves. It was peaceful but also full of life and music.

By late afternoon, we had walked for hours without really realizing it. The sun was starting to dip, and we decided it was time for an early dinner. Just a short walk from the garden led us back to the seafront, where we found a charming café right by the water. Wooden tables stood under awnings, and the sound of gentle waves added to the relaxed mood.

We ordered mussels in white wine sauce, a simple but perfect dish for the setting. The mussels were tender, bathed in a garlicky broth that begged to be soaked up with crusty bread. We paired it with a chilled glass of local white wine, light and slightly floral. With the sea breeze, the golden light, and the slow rhythm of the day behind us, it felt like a moment suspended in time.

We sat there long after we had finished eating, not ready to let the day end. Around us, families strolled along the promenade, children played near the edge of the water, and the sky turned soft pink over the horizon.

Looking back, it’s hard to believe we almost missed this place. The Adler Botanical Garden turned out to be a quiet gem — a mix of history, nature, and serenity, wrapped into a single perfect Sunday. It reminded us how refreshing it can be to slow down, to walk without a plan, and to notice the beauty in things both grand and small.

We’ll definitely be back. But next time, we’ll come earlier — there’s still so much we didn’t see. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll end the day again with mussels, white wine, and the sound of the sea.

That,s all for today.
Stand by

Sincerely yours

Я второй год собираюсь сходить летом в местный ботанический сад, но как-то не получается. Да его и не сравнить с тем, что ты показал.

В детстве я был в крымском ботсаду... от этого я ожидал большего. Но наверное, надо ценить то, что есть)
