Wild Animals at a cenote in Yucatan, Mexico

In my post yesterday, I wrote about our experience watching wild birds at the cenote we went to. It was not very busy, and therefore more animals showed themselves than usual.
There were plenty of birds as shown in the photos of yesterday's post but there was one little guy who managed to charm his way into the hearts of
the visitors without even trying!
As soon as we sat down to open and eat our lunch, the birds came flying to pick up the crumbs.
But this also attracted the attention of this cute, and very interesting little mammal called the Coatie, or Coatamundi.
As you can probably see, the Coatie is related to the raccoon. After reading about them a bit, I found that they are really quite friendly animals and
that they're even suitable as pets!
Now, I wouldn't want to steal one from their natural habitat to have in my home but if I make my wish come true, a piece of land with a cenote, then there would definitely be space to have these guys roam around freely.
I fed him a little bit of what crumbs the birds had left and he took it from my hand gracefully.
I was still quite cautious because I saw his needle-sharp teeth but he didn't seem to have any bad intentions other than trying to get his share of the bounty.
He was definitely not vicious like some raccoons can be.
In fact, the way he interacted with us, showed me that he was quite used to human attention, and in this place, he would definitely be protected by the owners of the land.
There are a few of these beautiful creatures in the city of Playa del Carmen. They took up residence at one of the resorts, where they're cared for by staff.
But you can never really see them up close unless you're in the resort, so to see this guy up close is really something special.
A good reason for us to go back to this particular cenote!
I hope you enjoyed these photos of our new cuddly friend.
Thank you for reading!
