Hivefest 9: The In Between - See the Beauty of Split, Croatia and some food too! A little photo dump!

During Hivefest, there are always those moments when people spread out and do their thing.
See the place they're in, maybe a museum or two, the beach, you name it. In Split, this was no different. So let's see what I came up with for this post. If you haven't read any of my earlier Hivefest posts you can find the links to them below the image.

Walk around the City

After the second conference day (and my first real full day in Split, since I'd only just arrived the evening before) people scattered and little groups formed who each went their own way.
A bigger group were all going for coffee to pay with HBD, which I described yesterday, and after this, many of us had gotten hungry, so we went to a nice restaurant for dinner.

Along the way, running behind the crowd, I managed to snap some pictures. So forgive me if they're not perfect, but they were truly on the go. No time to stop! And I didn't want to get lost here, because Split has LOTS of small little alleys. My GPS on my phone was only half doing its job.

I'm not sure what this building was, but it was nice, and so I had to take the picture. Only one of many.

This was one of the squares in the city. Not sure if it was the main one, but it's pretty.

A lovely tower on that square. I'd love to know more of the history of it.

Just a random image of a nice corner...

We all went to a lovely place in the city center. I can't remember the name of it, but apparently, some of us had been there before. I'll find the name at some stage. The waiter looked like they had modelled Gru from Despicable Me after him. He laughed really loud and genuinely when I told him that. I needed protein, so these mussels were just what I craved. And delicious!

After dinner we all went on our way again, and then there was some nightlife...Which I will write about later. But I managed to take more pictures.

I loved all the little squares and alleys. It gives you the feeling of something really old, but in a modern setting.

This tower was just fantastic. I love the way it was designed and then built. They don't make them like this anymore these days!

IMG_20240912_231215.jpg
Just like the tower before this, this is all part of the Diocletian palace. Pretty much the whole city center seems to be. It's just beautiful. And to think Romans once wandered the streets here...

IMG_20240912_231243.jpg
A little alley with shops left and right. So beautiful!

IMG_20240912_231358.jpg
A different angle of the tower. Isn't it amazing?

And another little alleyway. If I would have had more time in the city, I definitely would have walked around for a few days to explore.

Unexpected Split

Split was NOT what I expected. Mainly because I didn't have any expectations. I knew it would be a good place to be or Hivefest wouldn't have been here. However, I was pleasantly surprised by its beauty. It was clean, no garbage anywhere. I could see this was because they collected garbage every day and the streets were scrubbed clean each night. That's dedication!
It felt very safe, even in the middle of the night walking alone. It's a small city center, so you can pretty much walk everywhere. It felt a little like a miniature Rome without all the traffic.

Please come back for more impressions, and more of what we were all up to in these Hivefest days!
