Road Trip [Cornwall, UK]

"Road trips can be fun, but always take pit stops." — yours truly

Hubby and I were passengers in our friend's Audi TT, and my being vertically challenged scored me in the backseat, which had very little room. We were travelling from Devon to Cornwall, which is a relatively short 2-hour drive, and the traffic on the motorway was smooth sailing, so I opted to skip the servicing stops along the way, as we were nearing our destination.

Big mistake!

Major roadworks...
Traffic jams along a narrow stretch, with nowhere to pull over.
Cramped and busting for a pee.

... a nerve-racking experience that I don't want to relive.

Big relief!

No, I didn't wet my pants.

Whew!

The most annoying thing besides the discomfort I felt was not being able to capture the scenic views, due to the restrictive movement in the back of the car... But there's always a next time, right?

Cornwall is a gem of a location in the south-west region of England, and the mesmerising beauty of the county made me realise just how underrated domestic holidays within the UK is.

Untitled design-15.gif

The weather was hit and miss, but mainly hits, thankfully, as we spent much time recuperating in the hot tub while at the lodge.

A change of scenery, even if you're normally based at a beautiful location, refreshes the mind, especially as winter is coming.

This trip was a week at our friend @diveratt's timeshare lodge on a lush estate, away from the touristy congested centre of Cornwall, where we could relax and unwind peacefully, with another couple of friends.

I was ecstatic that the lodge was equipped with an exhaust, as the plan was for each guest to cook a meal on one evening, and my menu was Jamaican Curry Goat with rice and peas; My curry had a rich aroma which permeated the room. That meal turned out lovely, and I'll be sure to share a post with the Foodies Community, as it's always fun prepping and cooking curry goat.

"Cornwall has the kind of blues we seldom associate with the UK."

Gwithian Beach

Tide times are about the biggest concerns that one might have when in Cornwall because the change in them can be drastic, and rapid.

It's hard not to fall in love with a place like this, and you immediately fantasize about living in this area. However, whenever I speak to locals, they are quick to emphasise how seasonal employment is, due to the weather and other factors, which see fluctuations in tourism.

Our walks along the beach were tranquilising, with rough crashing waves that appeared to be rushing to give big hugs.

The highlight of our trip was a 10-minute train ride to the quaint town of St. Ives, which is known for its surfers and big waves.

We avoided most of the zombie-slow-walking tourists, by taking a casual stroll along the beach before merging out onto the main streets.

A stunning stretch of white sandy beach.

There's no trip to Cornwall without indulging in Cornish Pasties. Here hubby queues with mates to place some orders for our group. Travellers walk along the promenade feeding birds and keeping a keen eye on seagulls, who have no qualms about snatching pasties from people.

Visiting St. Ives was nostalgic for hubby and me, as we spent a week here 12 years ago, shortly after I first came to live in the UK. I was mesmerised, and somewhat bemused by the British Blue waters and white sandy beaches.

... and guess what? It's great that I now have hive blockchain to document my holiday this time around, as I have no photos of my previous trip there.

Thanks for checking out my post:)

All images were taken by me on my week's stay at Clowance Estate and Country Club, Cornwall UK 23 Sep to 30 Sep 2023.

You took some nice shot and you cracked me up a little with the "no, I didn't wet my pant" 🤣🤣🤣

Hehe!
It was a narrow miss, and I had a panic attack in the backseat. I am claustrophobic, and the car was overloaded. Cold sweat and rapid heartbeat had me worried 🤣

Wet white pants would not be a good look. 😀 The time share looked relaxing. I am sure your curry goat will be delicious.
Looks like a great time in Cornwall - lovely photos.

🤣No, that would not be a good look at all. Gosh, it was an agonising pain. When we got to the lodge I nearly, nearly gave in as my friend struggled to open the door. I was completely out of breath and flushed. I honestly don't know how I managed to hold it in.
It was a weird start to the holiday, and yes, Cornwall is breathtaking. I'm happy that you like the photos 😊

Ahh that feeling of badly wanting to pee while on the road was something challenging 😁🤣.

Was on a road trip yesterday too and good thing there are public toilets we passes by or I might hide a little in the bushes 😜

Haha! You're lucky that you had the option of bushes. I had nowhere to stop, otherwise, I'd have jumped out of the car and done it like a dog. 🤣
It's just a horrible experience😂🤣

That was kinda hard and what if the car pass by humps 🤣

In my moment of panic and agony, I was imagining all those things. I honestly nearly screamed. I was in such a bad state that I could not even say the word toilet, cos psychologically, I knew I would wet myself then.
I felt like I was suffocating at the back and asked them to let some fresh air in, but it was cold and rainy and caused more discomfort. I wanted to cry like a baby needing pampers 🤣

Goodness! Thankful you manage to hold it until you reach the toilet. Or else I can't imagine too if you , 🤣

Looks like a breath of fresh air. I love the looks of the waves coming in. Might be shocking but I have never set foot on a beach near any sea. Glad you were able to document this time around and thanks for bringing us there. Awesome photos for remeberance!!

Thank you 😊

I have never set foot on a beach near any sea.

Seriously???

Yeah, the waves are spectacular and it's fun to watch the surfers. Yes, the water is cold here, but gosh, the sea is prettier than many tropical beaches that I've been to.

It's embarrassing but true. It's on the buck list though. I've seen a few seas but never got close to experience it. Where I'm at I'm over 1000 miles from the closest one. I will knock it out eventually 😁

I'm trying to imagine a life without the sea.
As a little girl, I was extremely fearful of the sea. Big waves were monsters in my eyes. Every weekend my family went to the beach for a picnic, and I dreaded it like you have no idea. Yet, I spent all my days by the river.

I do hope that you get to visit a stunning beach one day.

The sea for me is magnificent. It is vast, and if you should sit and meditate by the shore, it does something to your mind. Tidal change is another powerful thing. I'm sensitive to "energy" and moon phases, so those things affect me easily.
In the Philippines, I lived on a cliff overlooking the sea. On days of rough seas, I got seasick just looking at it from my kitchen window. My vertigo would kick in and I don't have sea legs 😏

For now I dream of it but I get my fixes with rivers, lakes and streams. I imagine it's much different. There's quite a few that live in the Midwest that haven't experienced the sea. I'm not alone but I all my siblings and cousins have experienced. All my cousins live in New York so it's not far away. Only one in family, haha.

In a way, this is special. It highlights just how beautiful the variety of nature is. I've seen some gorgeous places in nature that you've visited, and it reminds me of when I came back for a month to the UK while I was living in the Philippines. I thought that I would have missed my daily view of the ocean tremendously, and I did not. Simply because I spend the days in the UK by the canals and lake... all very different, but equally beautiful with immense benefits for my wellbeing 🙏

I'm sorry that you had to travel in the back seat of the car, generally there is so little space that your legs and lower back get very tired.
I don't doubt that you want to live in a place like that, the beach is really beautiful, a shame that the employment rate varies with seasonality
I loved the walk through the city, especially the architecture of the cobblestone buildings
Yes #hive is great for documenting our vacation experiences
Have a splendid day

Hello @jlufer

Thanks for your lovely comment 😊
Cornwall has a bittersweet story, indeed, which is that on the outskirts there are gorgeous holiday homes for well-to-do people, and yet on the inner sections there is a lot of poverty. Still, it's a gem of a place, despite the frustration locals feel for living in a place where tourists flock the streets.
Thanks for stopping by:)))

I've only been to Cornwall once but hopefully I can go back at some point. The weather was a mixed bag. I can remember the country lanes were a little narrow, which led to a bit of maneuvering when another car was coming the other way.

Yes, some narrow lanes look too small for one car, and meeting oncoming traffic can startle a driver.
It would be great if you get to visit again and hubby and I are thinking of probably getting the train sometimes:)

No photos of the Cornish pasties?

The white sand beaches look nice. Not too many tourists which is a major plus as well.

The timeshare accomadations look good. Hot tubs are always fun. Especially bc you can enjoy them in rain or cool weather.

Hehe! When I wrote this, I realised that I didn't take a photo of it, but it was because we were walking while eating it. We brought back some authentic ones, so I'll take a pic of it when we are gonna eat it, and add it here 😁

Yeah, the lodge is an attractive double A-frame structure with a bedroom that feels like a treehouse on top and 2 bedrooms downstairs. The grounds are green and lush with a lake and lots of privacy...You are right about being able to use the hot tub in the rain, and I could imagine how great it is in the winter:)

I often forget to take photos of food and treats for the same reason so I shouldn't judge.

Is timeshare still a thing nowadays? I've heard so many stories about it in the past on how it doesn't cost in. That one looks really nice!

Yeah, you have to wonder if people still see the value in timeshare, with travel being more accessible.
He has been going there for over 30 years, and they tried to entice him with another contract, for when this one ends in 6 years' time. I'm happy that he didn't.
I would have told them that I enjoyed my years, but I'm older and wiser.

It's a terrific estate though!

Hey, you there @millycf1976 looking great on your trip 😍. The sea looks beautiful there, I thought it was always snowing/cold there so you couldn't enjoy the sea very much but I was wrong.

"My curry had a rich aroma which permeated the room. That meal turned out lovely, and I'll be sure to share a post with the Foodies Community, as it's always fun prepping and cooking curry goat".

It's delicious to imagine that curry 🤤. I like goat meat but I've never tried goat with curry it sounds delicious 😋

Hello @luckylaica

You would be surprised just how stunning the beach is in Cornwall. When I first came to the UK, I loved it and wanted to live there. Yeah, it's most times cold, but at this time of the year, they get a warm spell. A retired Sailor was explaining it to me the other day, and then he got side-tracked.

I'm supposed to draft that Foodies post with the curry goat. I think you'd love this. It's very different from how they cook goats in the Philippines.
Thanks for stopping by 😊
