Exploring the medieval Avebury Henge and Stone

My husband and I went to explore the historic Avebury's Stone Circle and Henge, and surrounding areas in Wiltshire, UK.

The magnitude of the site has mesmerised us, and even though it was spring break with many families visiting, we were lucky to capture shots without obstruction.

Hubby who is more inept on UK history, wrote two posts with overhead drone shots of the area and some black and white images and history of the area from @scubahead, to grasp the significance of this place that's still relevant today.

The immaculate grounds are an open space for anyone to explore and an excellent escape in nature.
There were volunteers leading tours, but hubby and I were keen to discover the area ourselves, so we wandered around at a snail's pace, enthralled by the sedating yet energising effects of the greenery and the surrounding monuments.

The sacred landscape has an unexplainable vibrance to it, and the lushness of the grounds or the defined paths, but it kept us going, as we were urged to explore.

PSX_20240421_153015.jpg

The contrasting colours along the fields were soothing to the eye.

It wasn't the sunniest of days, and we kept looking at clouds passing over, with fingers crossed that it would not rain.

Looking at the rocks abstractly was fascinating and stretched my imagination.

Whether it's intentional or mere coincidence, this one, in particular, looks like the head of an animal—maybe a lion—with illusions of facial details of an eye, nose, and mouth from this angle.

Natural textures and designs

My eyes zoomed in on the smaller details, and I became fascinated with the textures, natural designs, and formations on some of the stones, which felt surreal to witness, let alone touch.

I like the idea of using these designs as wallpaper and background photos.

I guess it would be a great idea to have a map to navigate your way around in a sequence, but on this occasion, it was all zen navigation.

We meandered around the local community that was developed around the ancient monuments and out towards a quaint pub and ice cream parlour in a little village that is all a part of the attraction.

This walk in nature had me exploring not only the large monumental stones from medieval times but also some intriguing finer details, which used up all the memory on my mobile phone. So it excites me to share with #WednesdayWalk, one of my favourite communities, by @tatoodjay.

This turned out to be quite a photo essay and I trust that you also enjoyed seeing the overhead shots in the links added above.

Thanks for stopping by, as always.

All the images above are mine.

What tickles my fancy...
“Nature, the outdoors, art, and culture are all essential to my well-being; my soul is nurtured through fitness, photography, meditation, and mindfulness, all of which bring enjoyment to my daily life. I see environmental stewardship as my responsibility and enjoy using herbs and spices for cooking and also for natural remedies. Cinnamon is one of my favourite spices, and I occasionally sprinkle it on my coffee.

My blog frequently features my minimalist lifestyle and adventures while living on my narrowboat.”

Irie love,

Milly

It is nice it didn't rain with the weather sky changing. I guess the finger crossed work miracle, hehe...

The start to this comment was supposed to be wow, but something else came to mind. Just looking at the pictures alone is a perfect scenery for a day and night out in the presence of nature. The greeennnery around is just... It's so beautiful that I can't fully express myself.

Thanks for sharing these beauties...

There is something pretty incredible about experiencing large rocks intentionally stood up and arranged in a formation. it can be very mysterious.

Indeed! It makes you want to stop and inspect/admire each of them:)

It also looked like the head of a lion to me 😅 Hi Milly, it is a pleasure to greet you and see that you have enjoyed a very special day. Apparently it never started raining and that added up to a perfect day where you were able to take pictures without so many obstacles. It is felt through your words that you enjoyed the walk and I have gone to your husband's profile to continue looking at pictures, my favorite is the black and white post. Thank you for sharing your experience, a sincere hug for you!. 😘

Hello @jesuslnrs
Thanks for your lovely comment. I'm pleased that you got to check out the other links in the area. I didn't want to duplicate anything that he had already written. Yes, the stones are perfect for black-and-white images.
Have a lovely day:)))

I've seen a lot of artifacts and lens flares in photos, but this is one of the freakiest I've encountered! It's like a ball hanging in the air, casting a shadow on the clouds! 😮 Did Scubahead see this?

Hehe! This sounds like the strangest thing, indeed. No, he didn't mention anything of the sort, but the area is so amazing that we might return if we get the chance:)

Aye, ye ye ye! I just got what you pointed out while reviewing the photos. That photo in particular was taken right before I got off the bus. That's a reflection of my flash on the windscreen. 🙃 I discarded many other photos because of it, but that one slipped 🙄

I'm glad you did not cull that one, as it was a smashing shot, despite the strange artifact! The field of yellow flowers is gorgeous, the view is magnificent, and the clouds are fascinating!

Yeah, I think that's why I didn't delete that photo, but I admire your eye for details 👏

Now this place looks like where the Barbie movie "The Diamond Castle" was set. The landscape was filled with impressive rock formations as this one. It's beautiful.

I like the idea of using these designs as wallpaper and background photos.

You can also make a portrait out of it and put it on the wall in your foyer. Would look really nice.

No, I don't see anything reference to this place on Wiki, but I see where you're coming from.

You can also make a portrait out of it and put it on the wall in your foyer.

Now, that's a brilliant idea. I don't have space on my boat but it would be nice to use in picture frames if I ever go back to running hotels or lodges.
Nice one 🙌

No, I don't see anything reference to this place on Wiki,

The scene I'm referring to is the one where Liana and Alexa travel through the "Giant's Playground", a scenic area with large, towering rock formations.

Now, that's a brilliant idea.

😊😊

I haven't seen the film, but I like the idea of a giant playground. Somedays I could use one of them:)))

Hello dear friend @millycf1976 good morning
How great that you have discovered this charming and historic place.
It's good that it is publicly accessible, and the place has a person who acts as a tourist guide, although you have preferred not to wait for his services.
Beautiful photographs, I love the texture and features of the stones
Have a lovely day, I appreciate you sharing this experience.

Hello @jlufer
The main road runs right through the Circle, and I had passed by many times in buses, where you get a nice view too. Still, the trip was worth it, to see the stones and monuments up close and personal.
Have a great Wednesday:)))

Why do I think like this is the reference of the stone structures from Assassin’s Creed (the game)? 😅
Anyways they are so great!! I like to see them for myself one day! Maybe there’s a puzzle that you need to solve there to show some hidden passage? 😂
Lucky you it didn’t rain!

Haha, I see the connection there.
I think it's remarkable that this prehistoric Britain site is still maintained, and I'm happy that we got the chance to explore it:)))

Those huge rocks are so cool to look at! I wonder how they were able to make it stand. And the open greeneries were just so relaxing to look at!

Some of the rocks have been re-erected throughout the years and I'm sure that the council who oversees the site does regular checks to ensure that they remain solid.

Yes, the greenery is breathtaking, and it makes me appreciate the frequent rainfall more:))

Haha! Yeah, I see things in the abstract, so sometimes it's like my mind playing tricks on me 🙃😉😆

I'd return to explore more of the area if I'm in this city for much longer:)))

Rocks do that also looking at some cut wood does the same for me. Abstract minded 👍 Funny story there's a stone tile in my bathroom. I see a smiling person in it every time I see it, haha. If I remember I'll take a picture of it.

Yeah, I can see that with wood too.
There's a famous rock in Jamaica called the Pum Pum Rock.
You could take a look at the rock, then look up what a pum pum is and tell me what you think.
The story is that a man was arrested for painting the rock pink.

Here's a video of the rock.

I looked at the rock first and it confirmed what I was thinking it looked like when I looked up the meaning😂

Well I took a picture of tile than I seen another that I think looks another person. What's weird is they look relatives, you see?:

Yep! I see faces there on that tile, and the funniest thing is that no matter how many times you look at the tile, you're always gonna have the same thoughts 😁

The aerial views of this place are impressive. It is apparently a big energy centre. And although it is not known for sure what these stones were used for, some theories point to fertility rites.

I went looking for more information, after reading your post. Thanks for sharing. 🤗

It is a big energy centre.

Well said! 💯

Although it is not known for sure what these stones were used for, some theories point to fertility rites.

It's intriguing, eh?

Yeah, I still want to do more research.
I've mentioned to one of my neighbours that I visited the location, and he told me that he grew up in a home beside the Church, where his father's home is. His dad passed away early this year but he still visits the area. I'm gonna chat some more with him, and also another tenant told me that she volunteers there as a tour guide.🤗
