In the Heart of São Januário [EN/PT]

These are some photos I took last week during my first visit to the stadium of my beloved club: Vasco da Gama. But before talking about the photos, I need to mention how this club has a gigantic history on the world stage, not only for its titles but also for its achievements off the field.

My team, Vasco da Gama, was the first Brazilian club to field Black players at a time when racism was seen as "normal" in society. And Vasco didn't stop there: it fought in every way to break down this barrier within football, a sport that, at the time, was reserved only for the elite. Because of this struggle, it became one of the main reasons for the popularization of football in Brazil. A club of the people, a century old, whose stadium is located in the middle of one of Rio de Janeiro's many communities, the famous favela. If you want to know more about this, search "Historical Response of 1924" and you will understand the size of this club in social terms.

The most interesting thing about the stadium is that it was built by the fans themselves, brick by brick, showing strength, passion, and a sense of belonging. And there I was, fulfilling a dream and seeing a piece of that history up close. To be honest, I still can't believe I was there; it just hasn't sunk in yet. I visited the surrounding area, climbed to the Colina viewpoint, which is inside a local resident's house, visited the official store, and the common area where fans gather before the game with lots of samba.

It was incredibly special to be there and realize that every house, every business, every corner—everything—has a story connected to the club. Houses decorated with the Maltese Cross everywhere. It seemed like an entire city of Vasco fans.

I'm not from Rio de Janeiro, but I live in a neighboring state, and this football atmosphere always impresses me!
