The biggest sky I’ve ever seen

A little bit of a weird title, I agree, but I can explain.

Since moving here two years ago, I’ve spent at least part of every day simply looking into the sky.

Our new home

If you’ve read Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, you may be familiar with The Wheel (bear with me, I may be wrong, it’s been a while since I read the series). King describes the world revolving around a wheel that is visible in the sky. I understood the concept, but never witnessed the phenomena until coming to live here, high in the hills in South/West France.

Low cloud or mist? I suppose that depends on your perspective. Down in the valley it could seem like low cloud, but up high, it's definitely misty. We are at 200m elevation - 656ft

The black spot at the top of the image is possibly a raptor. The cloud formation is definitely curved*

Sunrise at our home is a magical sight. I don't see it very often. The mist/low cloud effect is mesmerising

Down below the lake, we have a patch of ground that takes ages to dry out. We've named this place 'Soggy Bottom'. There are no clouds to show the curved effect. I do love this view.

Clouds casting shadows

It’s almost as though you can see the curve of the world. The effect is especially clear when the sky is cloudy. The clouds seem to start from a point beyond the horizon and expand in a cone or segment of a wheel – sometimes it looks like a beam from a torch or flashlight shining across the sky.

I love the sunsets here. They are awe inspiring and give a perspective that we are a tiny speck on this planet

Now we're getting the effect

The sky expands outwards. It's not the camera, this is the same effect I see with the naked eye

I sometimes feel so small when I look up. Sometimes I can experience a sense of vertigo

I’m not sure if I can capture the effect in my pictures and I have been looking back.

I have spent a lot of time in the main bathroom on the back of the house. No, not because I’m a clean-freak or that I have tummy problems, it’s simply because the view is spectacular!

Today is Sunday and I’m a little stuck for time. The rules here prevent us making noise before 10am and after 12 mid-day and I would like to get out to get some work done before the time constraints kick in.

So, this is going to be a short-but-sweet post, filled with sky.
