Maybe I set your expectations too high, but it's still a very impressive park. Locals have a discount on tickets.
They used to have a butterfly house, guess it's not there anymore. Last year I went there and it had a cool cactus area, and I could see they were working on it.
There are some trails up on the hills inside the park, where you really feel like you are inside the jungle. Lot's of hidden spots in there, it's fun to explore.

I think you should visit also Parque Lage, it's near by, it has the same feel of Jardim Botanico and it's free. It's where the Visual Arts School is (part of the federal university of RJ).

i totally missed the trails! i heard that is the best spot to see animals... i was there alone, unable to read the Portuguese, but i was very much glad i went, worth every penny. I almost got a tour of the art school nearby, @alexandrefeliz knows a teacher there, but it didnt work out. Now i am in Sao Paulo, and flying back to the US on monday
