Passion Fruit - Maracujá [EN/PT-BR]

Lately I posted about a few things we missed from Brazil, once we moved to San Diego. I'm going to keep this sequence and post about one more thing that we missed, Passion Fruit.

Passion fruit is a very common fruit in Brazil, at least in the southeast. It grows everywhere, even in the middle of the big cities you might see a vine growing in some power or telephone cable in the streets. In the grocery store, you can find the fresh fruit for very cheap, about R$15/Kg (U$3/Kg), or you can also find the frozen pulp, concentrated juice (duzens of different brands), ice cream, and all kinds of different products you can imagine.
Here in San Diego you rarely find any passion fruit related products, but I can find the fruit in the grocery store. The difference is the price, and as you can see below, here it costs U$5 for 2 (probably not even 250g).

Recentemente, postei sobre algumas coisas que sentimos falta do Brasil, depois que nos mudamos para San Diego. Vou manter essa sequência e postar sobre mais uma coisa que sentimos falta, o maracujá.

O maracujá é uma fruta muito comum no Brasil, pelo menos no sudeste. Ele cresce em todos os lugares, até mesmo no meio das grandes cidades você poderá ver uma trepadeira crescendo em algum cabo de energia ou de telefone nas ruas. No supermercado, é possível encontrar a fruta fresca por um preço muito baixo, cerca de R$15/Kg (U$3/Kg), ou também é possível encontrar a polpa congelada, suco concentrado (dúzias de marcas diferentes), sorvete e todos os tipos de produtos diferentes que você possa imaginar.
Aqui em San Diego é raro encontrar produtos relacionados ao maracujá, mas posso encontrar a fruta fresca no supermercado. A diferença é o preço e, como você pode ver abaixo, aqui custa U$5 por 2 (provavelmente nem 250g).

The fruit in Brazil is usually yellow when ripe, and here they are red/purple, but they taste the same.
Since we really like passion fruit, specially my kids love passion fruit juice, and I can't afford to pay U$20 to make 1/2 gallon of juice, I decided to plant a passion fruit vine at home.
We planted this vine about 3 years ago, and it grows a lot and doesn't need much care. Last year it gave us hundreds of fruits, and we froze so much pulp!! It produces during most of the year, and only stops when it gets cold in the winter.
I trimmed it well during the winter as it was starting to damage my roof, but in the spring it grew back pretty fast and we already have easily more then 100 fruits hanging from it.

As frutas no Brasil são geralmente amarelas quando maduras, e aqui são vermelhas/roxas, mas têm o mesmo sabor.
Como gostamos muito de maracujá, especialmente meus filhos adoram suco de maracujá, e eu não posso pagar U$20 para fazer 1/2 galão de suco, decidi plantar uma trepadeira de maracujá em casa.
Plantamos essa trepadeira há cerca de 3 anos, e ela cresce muito e não precisa de muitos cuidados. No ano passado, ela nos deu centenas de frutos e congelamos muita polpa!!! Ela produz durante a maior parte do ano e só para quando faz frio no inverno.
Eu a aparei bem durante o inverno, pois estava começando a danificar meu telhado, mas na primavera ela voltou a crescer bem rápido e já temos facilmente mais de 100 frutos pendurados nela.

One more thing I love about the passion fruit is the flower. I can't take enough pictures of the passion fruit flowers, it has so much detail, and a beautiful color combination, a work of art from mother nature! Check it out!

Outra coisa que adoro no maracujá é a flor. Não consigo tirar fotos suficientes das flores do maracujá, pois elas têm tantos detalhes e uma linda combinação de cores, uma obra de arte da mãe natureza! Olha só!
