Amsterdam - Where contrasts meet at every corner

A few weeks ago, I was in Amsterdam for the first time. A city that had been on my bucket list for a long time and which I was finally able to visit. In today's post, I would like to tell you about my trip to Amsterdam and the contrasts I encountered here. I hope you enjoy reading it.

The journey

As there are direct train connections to Amsterdam from very close to where I live, this was my first time traveling abroad by train. I have to say that this made the journey very relaxed. For this reason, we booked our hotel right next to the train station. This meant we were able to check in quickly after our arrival and then set off straight away to explore the city. We took a long weekend for our trip to Amsterdam and were out and about from Friday to Monday. We stayed at the ibis Amsterdam Centre. The hotel was fine. However, the rooms were very small, somewhat spartanly furnished and really noisy. However, the prices for accommodation right in the center of Amsterdam should not be underestimated and that's why we focused on a pure "sleeping accommodation" for this city trip.

Discover Amsterdam

When you arrive at the train station, you're actually already in the middle of things and can set off straight away. I immediately liked all the water, the beautiful canals with the bridges, the architecture and the overall atmosphere. As my friend @ogfox has been to Amsterdam several times, he already knew a few corners and was able to guide us through the city. But you can also let yourself drift through the small streets and always come out at one beautiful place or another or discover a new beautiful building.

As we were unfortunately unlucky with the weather on the first day, we mainly opted for indoor activities. So we strolled through the streets to one or two stores and visited Madame Tussauds and the Amsterdam Dungeon. From Madame Tussauds you have the opportunity to look out of a porthole over Dam Square Amsterdam. You can also take nice photos here if you don't want to hurry like we did because the photo session of the previous visitors took too long.

In addition to the typical photos with very realistic-looking celebrity wax figures, you can also have yourself painted as a Van Gogh painting, for example.

The dungeon takes up the city's gruesome history in typical fashion and is definitely a nice experience. But it doesn't differ much from dungeons in other cities. Especially on a rainy day like the one we had, a visit to Madame Tussauds and the Amsterdam Dungeon is a good idea.

While you're at the Dam, you can also visit the Royal Palace. This is located directly on the square and can also be visited from the inside.

Another indoor activity that definitely has a special entertainment factor is the Sex Museum. Here you can see pictures, figures and other erotic insights from different eras. The museum is relatively inexpensive with an entrance fee of 10 euros and has at least made us laugh a little.

And the subject of eroticism brings me to the biggest contrast I experienced in Amsterdam. If you stroll through the alleys in the direction of the "Old Church", you will not only automatically come to the huge and very impressive church surrounded by beautiful canals, but you will also discover that Amsterdam's red light district is located directly around the church.

I had heard a lot about the red light district in Amsterdam beforehand, but what I experienced on the spot was different to what I had expected. There were countless shop windows where you could look directly at the women and also see the "scene of the action". The door directly in front of it, only curtains that were drawn when the room was occupied. And all this between the cathedral and the church square. Contrasts that I hadn't expected and that were somehow fascinating and abstruse at the same time.

A few steps further between the strip bars and brothels were beautiful bridges with ornate railings and colorfully decorated bicycles. All embedded in these beautiful houses, which can be found throughout the city.

During our stay, we were even luckier with the weather and spent a few nice hours at Amsterdam Zoo. It is really worth seeing, has very beautiful enclosures and has been built with great attention to detail. You can see lots of very exotic animals and, for example, in addition to countless bird and wild animal enclosures, there is also a huge butterfly farm through which you can walk freely.

You can reach the zoo either on foot or in a few stops by train. But make sure you really take your time. You'll need it given the size of the zoo.

Coffee stores, culinary delights and bars

Of course, we didn't just take a look around the city but also visited one or two coffee shops, restaurants and bars. I found it interesting and an experience in itself to see how the legalization of cannabis and consumption in coffee shops is lived in Amsterdam.

As a restaurant, I can recommend "The Grasshoper", a rustic restaurant with a beautiful view of historic buildings. Here you can get delicious burgers and good steaks, among other things.

If you prefer Asian food and are looking for a special location, you shouldn't miss the Sea Palace. Located directly on the water and built and furnished in a very Asian style, it is certainly a special restaurant. A little tip: Even though the Sea Palace is very large, you should definitely reserve a table here. Otherwise you could be out of luck and not get a seat.

You can find small bars with a good atmosphere and delicious beer on almost every corner. Even for lovers of electronic music, there is always at least one good party to be found in Amsterdam. We ourselves went to the Amsterdam Music Festival during our weekend in Amsterdam. I'll tell you all about it in one of my next posts.

Conclusion

I really liked Amsterdam as a city. Even the sometimes bad weather couldn't detract from this impression and I will definitely be back. The relaxed atmosphere in the city despite the hustle and bustle, the small alleyways with beautiful buildings and the contrasts that can be seen in different places definitely have a charm all of their own. So I can only recommend that you add Amsterdam to your travel list if you haven't already done so or visited the city.

Hallo liebe Pinmapples,

vor ein paar Wochen, war ich das erste Mal in Amsterdam. Eine Stadt, die schon lange auf meiner Liste stand und die ich jetzt endlich besuchen konnte. In meinem heutigen Beitrag möchte ich Euch von meiner Reise nach Amsterdam und den Gegensätzen, die mir hier begegnet sind berichten. Ich wünsche Euch viel Spaß beim Lesen.

Die Anreise

Da es ganz aus der Nähe meines Wohnortes Direktverbindungen mit dem Zug nach Amsterdam gibt, bin ich das erste Mal mit dem Zug ins Ausland gereist. Ich muss sagen, dass sich die Anreise dadurch sehr entspannt gestaltet hat. Das Hotel haben wir aus diesem Grund auch direkt zentral am Bahnhof gebucht. Dadurch konnten wir nach unserer Ankunft schnell einchecken und uns dann direkt auf den Weg machen, die Stadt zu erkunden. Für unsere Reise nach Amsterdam haben wir uns ein verlängertes Wochenende genommen und waren von Freitag bis Montag unterwegs. Gewohnt haben wir im ibis Amsterdam Centre. Das Hotel war in Ordnung. Die Zimmer waren allerdings sehr klein, etwas spartanisch eingerichtet und wirklich hellhörig. Die Preise für Unterkünfte direkt im Zentrum von Amsterdam sind allerdings nicht zu unterschätzen und deswegen haben wir für diesen Städetrip den Fokus auf eine reine "Schlaftunterkunft" gelegt.

Amsterdam entdecken

Wenn man am Bahnhof ankommt, ist man eigentlich schon mittendrin und kann direkt drauf los gehen. Das viele Wasser, die schönen Grachten mit den Brücken, die Architektur und die gesamte Stimmung haben mir auf Anhieb gut gefallen. Da mein Freund @ogfox schon häufiger in Amsterdam war, kannte er schon ein paar Ecken und konnte uns gut durch die Stadt lotsen. Man kann sich aber auch gut durch die kleinen Gassen treiben lassen und kommt immer an dem ein oder anderen schönen Ort raus oder entdeckt ein neues schönes Gebäude.

Da wir am ersten Tag leider Pech mit dem Wetter hatten, haben wir uns vor Allem für Indoor Aktivitäten entschieden. Wir sind also durch die Straßen in den ein oder anderen Laden geschlendert und haben Madame Tussauds und den Amsterdam Dungeon besucht. Aus dem Madame Tussauds hat man die Möglichkeit aus einem Bullauge über den Dam Square Amsterdam zu schauen. Hier kann man auch schöne Fotos machen, wenn man sich nicht gerade wie wir beeilen will, weil die Fotosession der vorherigen Besucher zu lange gedauert hat.

Neben den typischen Fotos mit sehr realistisch aussehenden Prominenten Wachsfiguren kann man sich hier zum Beispiel auch als Van Gogh Gemälde malen lassen.

Der Dungeon greift in typischer Manier die schaurige Geschichte der Stadt auf und ist auf jeden Fall ein nettes Erlebnis. Unterscheidet sich aber nicht groß zu Dungeons in anderen Städten. Gerade an einem regnerischen Tag wie wir ihn hatten, kann man einen Besuch im Madame Tussauds und Amsterdam Dungeon aber gut mit einplanen.

Wenn man dann schon einmal am Dam ist kann man sich auch direkt noch den Königlichen Palast anschauen. Dieser befindet sich direkt am Platz und kann auch von innen besichtigt werden.

Eine weitere Indooraktivität, die auf jeden Fall einen besonderen Unterhaltungsfaktor mit sich bringt, ist das Sexmuseum. Hier könnt ihr Euch Bilder, Figuren und weitere erotische Einblicke über die verschiedenen Epochen ansehen. Das Museum ist mit 10 Euro Eintritt relativ günstig und hat zumindest uns das ein oder andere Lachen entlocken können.

Und das Thema Erotik bringt mich auch schon zu dem größten Kontrast, den ich in Amsterdam erlebt habe. Wenn ihr durch die Gassen in Richtung der "Alten Kirche" schlendert, kommt ihr automatisch nicht nur zu der riesigen und sehr eindrucksvollen Kirche umgeben von wunderschönen Grachten sondern entdeckt, dass direkt um die Kirche herum das Rotlichtviertel Amsterdams liegt.

Ich hatte zwar vorher schon viel über das Rotlichtviertel in Amsterdam gehört, das was ich dann direkt vor Ort erlebt habe, war aber doch anders als erwartet. Unzählige Schaufenster in denen man sich die Frauen direkt anschauen und auch den "Ort des Geschehens" direkt sehen konnte. Die Tür direkt davor, nur Vorhänge die zugezogen wurden, wenn der Raum gerade belegt war. Und das alles zwischen Dom und Kirchplatz. Gegensätze, die ich so nicht erwartet hatte und die irgendwie faszinierend und abstrus zugleich waren.

Ein paar Schritte weiter zwischen Stripbars und Bordellen waren dann schöne Brücken mit verschnörkelten Geländern und bunt geschmückten Fahrrädern. Alles eingebettet in diese wunderschönen Häuser, die sich in der gesamten Stadt widerfinden.

Während unseres Aufenthaltes hatten wir dann auch noch mehr Glück mit dem Wetter und haben unter anderem ein paar schöne Stunden im Zoo von Amsterdam verbracht. Dieser ist wirklich sehenswert, hat sehr schöne Gehege und ist mit viel Liebe zum Details errichtet worden. Man kann viele sehr exotische Tiere betrachten und es gibt zum Beispiel neben unzähligen Vogel- und Wildtiergehegen auch eine riesige Schmetterlingsfarm durch die man frei hindurchgehen kann.

Den Zoo erreicht ihr entweder zu Fuß oder in ein paar Stationen mit der Bahn. Nehmt Euch hierfür aber wirklich ein bisschen Zeit. Die werdet ihr bei der Größe des Zoos brauchen.

Coffeeshops, Kulinarik und Bars

Natürlich haben wir uns nicht nur die Stadt angeschaut sondern haben auch den ein oder anderen Coffeeshop sowie Restaurants und Bars besucht. Zu erleben wie in Amsterdam die Legalisierung von Cannabis und der Konsum in Coffeeshops gelebt wird, fand ich durchaus interessant und ein Erlebnis für sich.

Als Restaurant kann ich Euch zum einen "The Grasshoper" als rustikales Restaurant mit schönem Blick auf historische Gebäude empfehlen. Hier bekommt ihr unter Anderem leckere Burger und gute Steaks.

Wer lieber asiatisch Essen möchte und hierfür eine besondere Location sucht, sollte sich den Sea Palace nicht entgehen lassen. Direkt auf dem Wasser gelegen und mit sehr asiatischem Stil gebaut und eingerichtet sicher ein besonderes Restaurant. Kleiner Tipp: Auch wenn der Sea Palace sehr groß ist, solltet ihr hier auf jeden Fall einen Tisch reservieren. Ansonsten könntet ihr Pech haben und keinen Platz mehr bekommen.

Kleine Bars mit guter Stimmung und leckerem Bier findet ihr eigentlich an fast jeder Ecke. Auch für Liebhaber von elektronischer Musik ist in Amsterdam eigentlich immer mindestens eine gute Party zu finden. Wir selbst waren an unserem Amsterdam Wochenende beim Amsterdam Music Festival. Hiervon berichte ich Euch aber in einem meiner nächsten Beiträge.

Fazit

Amsterdam hat mir als Stadt wirklich gut gefallen. Auch das teilweise schlechte Wetter konnte diesem Eindruck keinen Abbruch tun und ich werde definitiv wieder kommen. Die entspannte Stimmung in der Stadt trotz des großen Trubels, die kleinen Gassen mit wunderschönen Gebäuden und die Gegensätze, die sich an verschiedenen Stellen zeigen, haben definitiv einen ganz eigenen Charme. Ich kann euch also nur empfehlen, Amsterdam in eure Reiseliste aufzunehmen, sofern ihr das nicht eh schon getan oder die Stadt bereits besucht habt.
