Water lilies at the garden

These water lilies are blooming beautifully at the Botanical Gardens in Chicago. It was a good picture taking day and I couldn't decide which photos I like best to include in this post. Do you have any favorites?

Water lilies prefer calm water and sunny locations. Hardy varieties can survive cold winters as long as their rhizomes are below the 2 foot frost line and do not freeze.

1

The leaves are called lily pads. Some of these have turned brown at the edges, which means the plant is reaching maturity.

2

Many of the water lilies at the gardens are tropical varieties and are planted in submerged baskets that can be brought indoors to survive the winter. They can be returned outdoors when the water warms up to a reliable temperature in the spring.

This spectacular water lily is known to have some of the largest leaves in the plant Kingdom. One variety of the giant lily pads, or platters, can reach up to 10ft ( about 3 meters) in diameter. The strong, buoyant leaves can hold a significant amount of weight.

Let me know if you have any particular favorites.

They are beautiful images. It's a sight to see all those lilies in the pond.

My favorite photo is the last one. Those huge leaves look like rafts and your lilies are the most beautiful. 😍

My favourite is no 11, springs up like a cup filled with grown algae I guess.

These pictures are amazing 👏 owing to the fact that once summer goes, some of them blossom back.

Similar scenario plays out here in some of our neighbourhood waterlogged areas.

Such artistic works freely created for us by nature are great sight to behold.

Cool looking water lollies. Curious I always call them lotus flowers, are they the same thing? I like the white ones the best!

Water lilies and lotus plants both grow in the water but they are different plant families. Lotus typically grows in warmer climates than ours. We do have a couple hardy native water lilies in the Midwest.
I like the white ones, too!

They are such pretty flowers aren't they? You don't see them much out west except in ponds they are intentionally planted. Great pictures!

Water lilies actually don't grow in rivers, they grow in lakes because the water in lakes is still. They bloom best when the sun shines brightly on calm water. So you've photographed these flowers in the Chicago Botanical Gardens in a very beautiful way.
