Touring the Lincoln-Tallman House

avatar
(Edited)

My neighbor is a docent at the Lincoln-Tallman House, a historic Italianate-style mansion in Janesville, Wisconsin. It was built between 1855 and 1857 by William Morrison Tallman, who was a lawyer and abolitionist.

Historical Society photo

When my daughter-in-law was visiting me last week she was offered a tour of the museum and she took these photos.

The Tallman family resided in the house from 1857 until 1915. It was donated to the city on the condition that it be operated as a museum.
Tours of the house depict upper-class life in the latter half of the 19th century, with over 75% of the furnishings original to the house

Abraham Lincoln stayed with the family in October 1859, prior to his presidency. His stay at the Tallman House is the only documented time he stayed in a Wisconsin home

The house also has connections to the Underground Railroad, serving as a potential station for escaped slaves.

There are more photos, but I will save them for another post. I hope you enjoyed seeing these!

Wow, I was watching a movie of a century ago. Is the old lady a real person? Wow, a subterranean railway. It worth a visit to the place.

The woman in the photo is my dear friend and nearest neighbor. She dresses in period costume to give house tours.

The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved African Americans in the United States to escape to free states and Canada. It wasn't a literal railroad, but a metaphor for the clandestine system that helped freedom seekers escape bondage

love when local history ties directly into the national story, and this post does that so well. From the architecture to the abolitionist legacy, this mansion is a rare gem. It’s comforting to know these stories are still being told with care and authenticity. I hope you continue to share more photos, I’m definitely hooked!"

This is an amazing architecture and thus story is quite important as the struggle between class and identity still exists. Thank you for sharing these...

It is interesting to see how much of history from over 150 years ago still relates to today

Abraham Lincoln stayed in that house for a time being. That's why his name was added to the house name-Lincoln-Tallman-house!!

Pretty interesting history!

The house also has connections to the Underground Railroad, serving as a potential station for escaped slaves.

Did Tallman family facilitate the escape?

Who is the Lady in the photographs? Your neighbor or your daughter-in-law?

Because the Underground Railroad was kept quiet for the safety of everyone involved there is not much known about activities
. My neighbor is the lady in the photos. My daughterinlaw is the photographer.

Haha how cool is that!

Such crossing of international lines with the Italian influence. Thinking back to construction well over a century ago and hearing it still has 75% of its original furniture is impressive. To imagine it as a potential stop on the Underground Railroad and how big a part of American history that is makes it even more special.

Excellent tour and mini history lesson!

Thanks! It is impressive that so much of the original furniture remains. Some family members removed a few pieces, but then the house was locked up and remained unoccupied for years
It is a local treasure and the Historical Society hosts several events on the grounds each year. Most recently a car show and there will be an art show later this summer

Hello, happy afternoon, I think the photos are excellent, they also give very interesting details, such as the staircase lamp, furniture styles, in addition to the lady who is as a model during the tour.
When I saw the pictures, I was reminded of the North & South series.
Really very pretty.

The place is fabulous and you look really beautiful dressed in period clothing. You take us back to the style of Pride and Prejudice, a novel that I appreciate so much.

The more knowledge we gain about history, the more interesting it becomes for us and the more beautiful it looks. This house is actually quite beautiful.
