The woman in the photo is my dear friend and nearest neighbor. She dresses in period costume to give house tours.
The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved African Americans in the United States to escape to free states and Canada. It wasn't a literal railroad, but a metaphor for the clandestine system that helped freedom seekers escape bondage
