On the threatened list
When I was a kid this is the bird that I identified as a woodpecker. It was the one I saw most frequently, but now it is on the threatened list due to loss of habitat.
After years of not seeing a Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) I am thilled to have this beauty visiting my seed feeder several times each day, bringing the total of Woodpecker species seen at my feeders to 6.
They are easily one of the most striking birds in North America with that bold crimson head, stark black back, and brilliant white underpants
They will eat insects, seeds, corn, acorns, beechnuts, pecans, and many kinds of fruits (including apples, pears, cherries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, grapes, mulberries, and poison ivy fruits) and often cache their food. It is the only woodpecker known to cover the stored food with wood or bark.

What a beautiful bird! It's a shame they're on the threatened list. Must be due to loss of habitat. they really are striking birds, very pretty! It's nice that he came to visit your feeder though, it must have been exciting!
