More Feathered Friends - Sparrows

There are approximately 138 species of sparrows worldwide. The American Birding Association (ABA) lists 43 species in the United States, including towhees and juncoes.

The White-throated sparrow is a favorite of mine with their handsome yellow eyebrows that are called lores.

Only 200 years ago, there were no house sparrows on the entire continent of North America. Today, it is estimated that there are over 150 million.

6 pairs of House Sparrow were brought from England and released in New York City in 1851 with the intention of controlling caterpillar populations that were damaging local trees. The House Sparrows thrived and quickly spread across the continent, becoming one of the most common birds in the United States.

With a beak full of nesting material. 'ti's the season!

Juncos are a small North American bird in the New World sparrow family Passerellidae. Until I read more information about them for various photo posts I've made on Hive I had no idea that Juncos are sparrows.

And Towhees are large sparrows! They are such pretty birds and I see them only infrequently here.

Daughter Ella captured most of these photos at the Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary near Lake Michigan in Chicago. It is a hot spot for birdwatchers, especially during migration times in the spring and fall.

OMG, I was totally unaware there were so many different sparrows. They are in my backyard every day. Love the one with yellow head. Ours are the common like gray one.

Until I started paying closer attention they all looked the same to me! I also see tree sparrows and fox sparrows here, but I have not yet gotten a good picture of them.

Those black sparrows are not available in our local area nor I have seen them before; you are so lucky to have them around.

Your photographs are amazing. I loved every single one of them. What beautiful sparrows. They are birds that captivate me, with great symbolism.

It turns out there are many species, I just found out. They are all beautiful with their own charms. But the yellow-browed one is more eye-catching than the others.

They are the same bird as yours, brought here 200 years ago from England.

Very original sparrows in America. We probably don't have any with yellow blood in Russia. Too bad, they look good in the photo.

Funny quickly a few sparrows took over the continent! They also are pretty much everywhere in South America too. They sure spread quickly! The white throated sparrow has pretty plumage, they don't live in California though. Every spring they are all building those nests and soon there will be even more of them! They are nice birds though, aren't they?

As a child my daughter read the Brian Jaques Redwall series where the characters were all animals and in the books Sparrows were bad guys. To this day she has no fondness for sparrows! 😁

Great shots 👍 interesting post. I get lazy and just call them all sparrows. I should take more time and figure out how many and which ones visit Vermont.

I was surprised when I started paying attention at how many there are! I just looked and it says that there are 12 kinds of sparrows in Vermont.
