Grand old historic homes
I wanted to share photos of a few more of the grand old homes in Elgin, Illinois This lovely old town has its own distinct history and identity, but now it is considered a suburb of Chicago.
The downtown is charming, but it is the residences I find most appealing.
This marvelous old building is now being used as a funeral home.
This is a multi-story Victorian residence. The plaque on the front porch indicates it was built in 1887. I am always fascinated by the distinctive color palettes people chose to paint and accentuate the details of these 'painted ladies'.
The house exhibits characteristics of Gothic Revival architecture with it's steep roof and vertical siding
The decorative gingerbread trim along the eaves features a cutout pattern. (I love the shadow of the trim.)

Such beautiful homes aren't they? It's nice to see them kept up so nicely, and I bet they are in a nicer area of Chicago! The one turned into a mortuary makes sense because it was a big house in it's early years. I love the Victorian and Gothic architecture, they're beautiful!

You are right. The northwest suburbs pricey neighborhoods. It takes money to maintain these big old homes!

Wow, @melinda010100 These homes are absolutely dripping with personality and history. That 1887 Victorian is a showstopper, those color palettes always scream character and charm. And I agree, the gingerbread trim shadows? Total gothic poetry! Elgin’s got some serious architectural gems, and you’ve captured their soul perfectly. Keep these tours coming, please!

Beautiful houses. And the main thing is that they are remarkably preserved.
In Russia, they like to hang signs on such houses that "they are of historical value, that they are an architectural landmark and they are protected by the state." These may be houses of regional or federal significance. BUT... They are usually dilapidated, dilapidated and unsettled. Especially if the building is only of regional value.
People take a lot of pride in restoring and maintaining these old houses, but it also takes a lot of money to do that
