Mbery Ha Tapesu'a -- Canna Edulis And Scaptotrigona Depilis -- Flor De Achira Y Abejita Peluquero

It was my intention to photograph the flower. The pretty pink Canna in Lidia's garden.
Achira were once grown as a staple for their edible starchy rizomes.
I grow them as beautiful flowers that need little to no care and will serve as emergency food in times of zombie apocalypse lock-down.
I've not actually tried them as food yet, but I'll let you know when I do.

Off in the bottom right corner, you can see her coming in for a landing.

She is yet another of the 40 species of stingless bees that live here in Paraguay.

I am fairly certain that she is Tapesu'a or Scaptitrigona Depilis

This one is commonly known as "the haircutter," so-named for their hive defense tactic of entangling themselves in the hair while biting with their mandibles.

They may lack stingers, but that doesn't mean that these little Melis will take it lying down.

Really rather non-agressive, they are one of the species raised for their powerfully medicinal honey...more valuable as medicine than that of Apis Meliferae or other Apis "honeybees"

They've been discovered to have a symbiotic relationship with a fungus of the genera Monascus (Ascomycotina). The nature of the apparent relationship between the bee larva and this fungus is as yet unclear. It seems that it may help to protect the food left for the larvae, from spoilage.

Stingless bees are in greater danger even than Apis, your typical "honeybee." They are of equal or greater importance as pollinators and their larvae in particular are even more vulnerable to pesticides.

Their societies are similar to those of other honeybees in that they have only one queen, a workerbee class, etcetera. Tapesu'a make their nests in already existing cavernous spaces.

Esta es comúnmente conocida como "peluqueros", llamada así por su táctica de defensa de la colmena de enredarse en el cabello mientras muerde con sus mandíbulas.

Puede que carezcan de aguijón, pero eso no significa que estos pequeños Melis se queden de brazos cruzados.

Realmente poco agresivas, son una de las especies criadas por su miel poderosamente medicinal... más valiosa como medicina que la de Apis Meliferae u otras "abejas melíferas" Apis.

Se ha descubierto que tienen una relación simbiótica con un hongo del género Monascus (Ascomycotina). La naturaleza de la aparente relación entre la larva de la abeja y este hongo aún no está clara. Parece que puede ayudar a proteger el alimento que se deja a las larvas contra el deterioro.

Las abejas sin aguijón están en mayor peligro incluso que las Apis, las típicas "abejas de la miel". Tienen igual o mayor importancia como polinizadoras y sus larvas en particular son aún más vulnerables a los pesticidas.

Sus sociedades son similares a las de otras abejas melíferas en el sentido de que sólo tienen una reina, una clase de abejas obreras, etcétera. Las tapesu'a hacen sus nidos en espacios cavernosos ya existentes.
