I Thought S/he Was An Amphisbaena, But S/he Is Actually A Snake Snake -- Creía Que Era Una Anfisbena, Pero En Realidad Es Una Serpiente Serpiente

While carving away with a pick-axe, to make the ditch to bury the pipe that'll bring the water
...I dug this little Pretty Pretty up out of the soil.

You can see above, that s/he is shedding her skin. Me too. Time to grow.
She is about 20cm long, so most likely a baby or young juvenile snake. and approximately a centimeter of diameter. She's allover pale gray; her ventral side as well. The color came through exact in the photos.

But when I first saw those terry-fold flaps, I thought that I'd hurt her.

Also, I thought that s/he was an Amphisbaena, or yvyja in Guarani...like this one who hatched in my hand. She'd been about 30 cm below the surface.

The first characteristic that gave her away as -not a Cecilia- is her pretty black eyes. Those known as Culebrilla Ciega, here in Paraguay, have nearly vestigeal, rudimentary mole-eyes underneath their skin. Hence, they are thought to be blind or "ciega". However they aren't completely blind.

They also have distinctly bands of rectangular scales. This lovely little beast does not.

Amphisbaena used to be believed to have two heads, one on each end. This is due to the blunt shape of their tails more or less the same as the shape of their heads. Look at her tail in the first foto and you will see it slims to a point like most snakes.

After revising her thoroughly and determining that I had not caused her any physical harm, I ended the traumatic experience of being fondled by a giant. Not wanting the chickens to eat her, I placed her gently inside of a miniature fence surrounding a baby tree.

Now, trying to determine what kind of snake she is has taken a lot longer than I imagined it would. Maybe you can help me to determine which it is, because even the folks in the fbook serpientes del paraguay group seem to be undecided.

Is she a baby mboi tata, or Phalotris tricolor?

Apostolepis asimilis seems unlikely to me, but it is one possibility I suppose

Or perhaps she's a Diadophis punctatus; this is my own personal best guess.

Another suggestion is Atractus paraguayensis...a species in danger of extinction.

...or some other variety of Atractus.

She was sweet and shy and I miss her. I'm not joking. I've thought about going to the area where I'd put her free but safe to sit very quietly and see if I see her around.

La primera característica que la delató como -no una Cecilia- son sus bonitos ojos negros. Las conocidas como Culebrilla Ciega, aquí en Paraguay, tienen ojos de topo casi vestigiales y rudimentarios debajo de la piel. De ahí que se piense que son ciegos o "ciega". Sin embargo, no son completamente ciegos.

También tienen bandas distintivas de escamas rectangulares. Esta pequeña bestia encantadora no.

Se creía que la Anfisbaena tenía dos cabezas, una en cada extremo. Esto se debe a la forma roma de su cola, más o menos igual a la de su cabeza. Mira su cola en la primera foto y verás que se adelgaza hasta una punta como la mayoría de las serpientes.

Después de revisarla a fondo y determinar que no le había causado ningún daño físico, puse fin a la traumática experiencia de ser acariciada por un gigante. Como no quería que las gallinas se la comieran, la coloqué con cuidado dentro de una cerco en miniatura que rodeaba un arbolito.

Ahora, intentar determinar qué tipo de serpiente es me ha llevado mucho más tiempo de lo que imaginaba. Tal vez ustedes me puedan ayudar a determinar cual es, porque hasta los del grupo de serpientes del paraguay de fbook parecen estar indecisos.

¿Es una cría de mboi tata, o Phalotris tricolor?

Otra sugerencia es Atractus paraguayensis...especie amenazada de extincion...

Era dulce y tímida y la echo de menos. No bromeo. He pensado en ir a la zona donde la pondría libre pero seguro para sentarme muy tranquila a ver si la veo por ahí.
