First Ever NAIDOC Ball in the Western Suburbs
This weekend was a first for many awesome events and things but none more so fun than our very first NAIDOC Ball held right here in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne which is quite a significant milestone if there ever was one. For many this won't be all that important or any different, after all it is just a ball and there are many of those around.
But the community value of this ball far exceeds that of many of the others with it's sole purpose to celebrate the worlds oldest, longest living culture on the planet. First Nations peoples of Australia.
How and why is it important? Well Australia has a bit of a dark history as do a lot of nations throughout the past but in Australia a lot of first nations people's still feel the impacts and many of our policies today unlike many other nations still impact first nations peoples. The impacts often lead to higher rates of crime, child protection involvement, lack of opportunity and the inability to practice one's culture.
It is very much still one of assimilation into another nations way of life and beliefs. A struggle much of the world is facing today.
Anyway, enough with the boring history lesson this weekend saw the first NAIDOC Ball which brough together local first nations families in a function designed for fun and engagement. A place where everyone can forget about their troubles and enjoy the night while having a meal and a drink.
It's been a long time coming and it was great to finally see it come together well done to the event organisers and all those involved in participating we had a wonderful time and really enjoyed it.
