Varadero Ceramics Workshop
With this publication I culminate the series "Wonders of the Hicacos Peninsula". We have visited quite a few corners of this tongue of land. I know there are still many things to discover, maybe I will do it another time and do not doubt that I will come back here to tell you about it.
After visiting a small museum that served as inspiration, we discovered a cavern, we went to the closest terrace to the sea in the whole peninsula, to a dream mansion, to a tower that watches over the coasts and we contemplated a tree that clings to life despite its half a thousand years of age. Today we will feed the soul with art. We will go to Varadero's Ceramic Workshop.
It was in the early 1990s that this workshop was created. Initially it was thought to satisfy the growing demand for souvenirs to sell to the tourists that crowded this seaside resort. Many young artists gave life to clay figures loaded with Cuban craftsmanship that tourists took as souvenirs to distant lands.
Several training courses and annual events would be held in this enclosure and thus artists who would stand out in the world of ceramics in our country were formed. Along with renowned figures, the new generation was nurtured by the knowledge of those masters who came here to create their art and that is how this gallery-workshop became what it is today.
The initial need to create simple suovenirs was joined by the growing desire to give clay an artistic meaning. The simplicity of the initial pieces became sculptural art made with the ceramic technique. From the experimentation that those restless young people, eager for knowledge and desire to do, dared to do here, came out exponents of this technique of universal renown. Many were and are those who today, working independently in Cuba and in other parts of the world, have taken their art to a higher level. An example to highlight is the artist Osmany Betancourt Falcón "Lolo", just to mention a few.
I was lucky that the day I came, the workshop was open and there was an artist working, the Matanzas ceramist Lázaro Zulueta Ortega. He is one of the founding artists who is still working here. He kindly let me in, gave me a tour of the whole place and showed me the works he was working on that morning.
He invited me to enjoy a promotional video of a personal exhibition of his work that was at that moment exhibited in a German gallery. The chat was very pleasant and lasted for more than an hour. He told me that they were very happy because the workshop had been completely remodeled. They had received some excellent quality kilns as a result of an Italian donation. His love for this place can be felt in his every word.
The workshop continues to create ceramic pieces to sell as souvenirs, that is its main purpose. At the same time, the artists who work here create and sculpt their works of great artistic value to exhibit or sell in other places.
I was able to photograph works in progress and some finished ones. There are pieces by various artists. There are complex, simpler, rustic, figurative, utilitarian, decorative, abstract...many and of different styles.
Before leaving my host surprised me with a gift. A small ceramic plate painted by him, something very simple, but charming. I was very touched by his detail and I left happy and grateful.

Thanks for using @worldmappin 😘
Wow amazing. This is super awesome
It's really great how something that started out as a necessity to fulfil tourist demand has turned into a incubation to nurture artists.
I'm not a big fan of abstract work, but the one you were gifted is so nice. I'm sure it will look perfect in your home
Que tengas un buen fin de semana
Wow! las esculturas son curiosas y coloridas.
Saludos!
When you find a guide who explains everything to you in such a beautiful place and who is also an artist and founder of the place, it becomes a marvel, because you can fully enjoy what you see and what they tell you.
Although at first the workshop was only for creating souvenirs for tourists, it has become something extraordinary where there are beautiful pieces of pottery, such as that plate with the woman's face. While I liked absolutely everything, because it is a fascinating art, I have made some pieces with my own hands, and the violins touched my heart. What beautiful art you have brought me; for me personally, it is wonderful, and I thank you for that. A big hug!

Hello @, I am impressed by this visit to the Varadero Ceramics Workshop. I love ceramic work, and there are a couple of creations that I find spectacular... One of them is this one:
You mention that part of the workshop's production is dedicated to tourism, but even so, I saw great beauty in all the creations. I really liked the detail of presenting some pieces without decoration... and what I liked most was the good heart that exists in that workshop.
Abrazo!! 🤗
