Ambrosio Cave
Hello travelers! Today I bring you the second publication of the series "Wonders of the Hicacos Peninsula". Today we will go into a cavern, the "Ambrosio Cave". The museum guide, from whom I learned of its existence, told us that the origin of its name is unknown. Unfortunately there are no historical records or anything to explain it, so this will also be an enigma 😉 .
The entrance to the cave was artificially excavated in the 1960s. The excavation was carried out in the hope of finding enough bat guano in the ground for export (that organic product has a high efficacy in agriculture). Unfortunately the guano find was a fiasco, but other interesting things were discovered.
The archaeologists found different pictograms drawn on the walls, some are preserved in their original form to date, others have been restored so that we can appreciate them. According to the interpretation given, the different chambers of this cave complex were used for mythical religious ceremonies.
This space has been open to visitors since the 1990s. According to the guide who accompanied us on the tour, some ill-mannered people have drawn on the walls, showing total impoliteness and disrespect for the sacred character that this place had for our ancestors. With great passion the guide shows us each pictogram and immerses us in a story so perfect that at the end of the tour you don't know if it is real or fictitious. Indians, Muslims, pirates, all a mixture of cultures and imagination linked with some reality. Because yes, this cave was a temple of our Indians and a refuge for pirates who smuggled on our coasts.
The peace and silence, only interrupted by the sound of the sea and the bats that nest on the roof, shelter you in this place. The temperature is very pleasant and the light that filters through the perfect holes in the ceiling make this space something overwhelming. The atmosphere between lights and darkness explains perfectly why our ancestors saw something special in this place.
Thirty minutes later, after applause and thanks to the passionate guide, we left with the feeling of having traveled back in time. It was a short but interesting visit that is definitely worth making. I will be back with more!
Cueva Ambrosio
Hola viajeros!!

Yupiii!!!🤩
Hey @mdrguez you are welcome.
Thanks for using @worldmappin 😘
With the heat that we have had the last few days, visiting a cave like the one that you shared would be a great choice! 😃 I remember when I was a child and we visited a cave in the middle of the summer, and one of my friends got cold as he went only in shorts, and it was too cold down there... 😨
It's interesting how caves attracted completely different types of people, from people trying to find shelter from rain and cold, or religious people doing sacred ceremonies, to pirates who used those places as a hideout for their stolen treasures!
Did you find a chest of gold? 😃

Un gran abrazo y bonito día! 🤗🤗
Gracias 💚
Wow, the holes in the ceilings and the light coming through them are sublime! Also roots of the trees found their way down through the holes. So cool. And the girl standing in the light - excellent! Too bad there are people with no respect for the ancient, sacred part of this place. 😠
Thanks Mipiano, I'm glad you liked this cave, it's very impressive to see how the light pours from the ceiling. On a moonlit night it must also be a nice show, it certainly gives magic to the place.

Amanda Flores y ahora de los Enigmas… haha… well, the time-travel worked, and those who painted the cave walls must’ve been possessed by some ancient force. I’m absolutely hooked on the series. Didn’t the guide explain what the pictograms denote? Any notions? Maybe it’s a treasure map… 😃
According to the guide, the pictograms represent animals, plants and everyday objects. They represented themselves. The circles, the guide says, are the representation of life 😏. These interpretations seem a bit off 🤭...but ok...The cave is beautiful and its atmosphere is really captivating.
Gracias Amanda, un abrazo.
😂 Well... you know my imagination is powerful, and I can see everyday objects as flying saucers or demonic ceremonial objects… haha. Imagine, that’s all open to interpretation—unless they’ve channeled the paint pigments to determine their age.
Los murciélagos se ven gorditos...😁
