Time for a whisky! Glenfiddich Perpetual collection Vat 01.

Well, time for a whisky review, I guess… 😜

Lataly (maybe for the last couple of months or so) I enjoy having 30-40ml of single malt scotch whisky almost every single evening. Since my wife was involved in a car crash in the late October and now I have to deal with the daily tasks of a mother, husband and whatever you can think of on my own. I have extremely busy days and the only time I have a bit of free time, when I can sit on the sofa and just relax, is when my wife and kids fall asleep. This is usually after 10PM, and although I am wuite exhauset alfeady, I prefer enjoying a good scotch on the sofa to the opportunity of having an extra hour of sleep.

The whisky I am going to share today is from the famous Glenfiddich distillery. I think that everyone with even minor knowledge of the brands of this industry knows this one and its famous deer!

Every whisky lover has tried, for sure, the usual species of this brand - 12 and 15 year old spirits, because they are greatly affordable and offer a good quality for the price. And although the prices got higher in the last few years, there aren’t many distilleries who offer a 12 YO for less than $40.

This one is from a special release, called Perpetual collection. What makes it unique is that the whisky is in perpetual motion in the vats, only bottling half of the whisky in the vat and then refilling. By the word of the distilerry itself, “Each successive fill is like a new generation of whisky building on the past, ever increasing in character, dimension and complexity…”

I found that I haven’t taken any photos of this whisky just before pouring the last 50 ml in my cup, but that’s not that late at all… I still managed to take a photo of the bottle with its own gilden liquid inside!

There are 4 versions of the Perpetual motion series of glenfiddich and the Vat 01 is the cheapest option. I grabbed this one for about $65 which is relatively good having in mind that this bottle holds 1l of liquid!

Now… this Vat 01 doesn’t have a state of its age, huat like the Vat 02. The more expensive Vat 03 and Vat 04 are 15 and 18 YO, and therefore more expenssive. It would be good if I had the means to grab the whole collection at once and compare the whiskys, but who knows… one day, maybe…

The color looks quite good and I don’t think there was an additional coloring used for this one. I like the way it sits in the glass. In the nose there is a lot of fresh fruit aroma. I can notice the strong green apple and pear in fromt with a bit more distant malt and caramel. Having a second sniff, a sense of sweet apple pie starts to come.

In the mouth, the sweetness of the whisky builds flavors of sweet honey and ripe peaches. The malt sweetness continues to be present. From the aromas and tastes, this one really feels fresh and like a younger whisky, but doesn’t have any harshness at all. The balance is wuite good.

There is a good mouthfeel, but it fades away relatively fast. In the beginning it certainly feels like a pear cider, then the sweet maly pie becomes present. Sadly, it really stays not that long, and to be honest, at this lroce point I was expecting a little bit more!

The score of the Glenfiddich Perpetual collection Vat 01 at the WhiskyBase is 82.53, which is good (I consider everything above 80 is a good whisky) but there are definitely a lot of better spirits that will cost you less. If this is at a 10-15% discount, it would feel like a more reasonable pirchase.

And… in the time of writing this review, only the last sip remained in my glass!

In conclusion, this was definitely one very good bottle of scotch, but I would really prefer it if it was a bit cheaper, more affordable. Then it would fit the “everyday whisky” category really well.

So that’s for today… see you soon in the company of another good whisky!

Cheers and bye!

My dad used to drink Glenfiddich and I've had the odd bottle too. I'd not seen that one though. Looks like it went down well.

I hope your wife is recovering.

I think this collection was created in times when the aged whisky became to reach critical low at distilleries and they started blending younger whisky with their older reserves. Glenfiddich is really the good old friend that can be found in a great variety of shops.

This was really a good one and deserved to be tasted. 🥸

My wife, thankfully, is recovering good for now, still she has to undergo a set of surgeries on the foot in the following 6-12 months but she is feeling a lot better now!

I've not tried that one, but I've always liked their scotch. It's affordable and always tastes great. I just wish they had a little higher proof, but I understand they have to keep it down to make more money! I love some good scotch!
