The weird New Year’s tradition in The Baristas family.
The Baristas were not like the common family. Everyone around them knew that they were strange in a lot of situations, but after all they were brilliant at their family business - brewing the best coffee in the city. But their weird traditions were something that no one would imagine.
After the Festivus was celebrated just before Christmas, now it was time for the New Year’s Eve. Their tradition originated from the one where people pour water in buckets and cups and throw them out of their windows. But Baristas added a layer of their own style on this. They didn’t throw water from their windows… Rather than they would throw away one of the finest and best prepared coffee. But that was not all of their way of celebrating the New Year’s Eve.
Because they were 8 people, they brewed 8 perfect cups of coffee and 8 terrible ones. For the second they were using dark roasted beans that were sitting on the shelf for more than a year. But what was the catch?
Every one of them was choosing only one of the two served cups without knowing which one was the good one and which one was the bad. Then they try their cup of choice. If they happened to choose the good coffee, they throw the coffee out of the window referring to scattering perfection out in the city. If they chose the bad coffee, they had to drink it all the way, in order to feel how people drinking bad coffee were feeling. It was like a warning for them, not to brew such a disaster in a cup.
It was now time to Junior Barista to try his luck. He took his cup with cold shaking hands. He was very nervous, because dark roasted coffee that was sitting on the shelf for the last year didn’t sound particularly good. He brought the cup near his lips… the first sip… it was terrible! He obviously chose the wrong cup. He wished that he could throw the cup out of the window, but his family pride didn’t let him do this. The terrible part was that this was a 200 ml cup and it was filled to the top. Just about 30-40 more sips to go…
About half an hour later he had the last sip. It was finally over. Junior Barista reached the other cup… He wanted to fix the flavor in his mouth. But as soon as the coffee touched his palate, he understood that the coffee in this cup was just the same terrible one. He looked at Master Barista puzzled.
“You didn’t think that we were gonna give you a good coffee, right? If you want to be a part of this family, you first need to learn how to be a real Barista. You don’t want to serve coffee like this to your customers, huh?”
Junior was sad… He wanted by his whole heart to become a skillful Barista, but he still wasn’t there. But traditions and situations like this one definitely made him more fierce and willing to give all his best to achieve the perfection that everyone around him was expecting.
Happy new 2023!
