Having a very special coffee this morning. Who does not love gifts? Especially coffee gifts…
It’s Saturday and it’s time for my usual coffee post for the week. Last week I had a very special Costa Rica, that was thermally fermented and very wild in its flavor, as you have may seen. I really thought that my coffee experience of Costa Rica has ended with this coffee, but I was wrong.
There is another special Costa Rica coffee that can be purchased in the Dabov Specialty Coffee and it is Geisha! You remember what geisha coffee is? It’s believed to be the most exquisite and tasty coffee variety and it’s most of the time pretty pricey. That’s the reason I haven’t purchased this coffee from my coffee supplier - the high price. But guess what… my coffee came with a gift this month! And the gift wasn’t just one.
One of the gifts wasn’t expected at all. The Delmare tea was a gift that comes when you make a purchase of $65 or more and your order is finished between 5th and 20th this month. And I knew that this was gonna be in the box with my coffee. What wasn’t expected at all was that Costa Rica geisha coffee. It’s the second consecutive order that I receive with such a present of 40 grams of coffee beans, and it’s the second time I receive such an exclusive coffee variety. This attitude from the company is quite special and although the coffee isn’t that much, I still have the chance to try coffees that I would usually not buy, because of the high price.
So it’s time to enjoy this special product. I opened the package and saw these light roasted beans. I thought that I really should make special photos to show you the beauty and probably experience with your eyes the exclusiveness of the coffee. Sadly, internet is still not transmitting aromas and tastes, so you’ll have to experience all of this only with your eyes.
Now I was in a dilemma. It’s not a huge one, but I had to decide how to brew the coffee. One of the options is the espresso machine.
It has the advantage of making the coffee very concentrated which will definitely lead to a very intensive Geisha flavor. These Jasmine notes will definitely bloom in the cup. But… the beans for espresso has to be ground very precisely, if you want to have the right extraction…
The other usual method, that I tend to use is V60. The regular visitors to my posts will know that, but I have to write it again. What’s the advantage of this method? The grind size is not that crucial and within the 2-3 steps around the right grinding setting you will be okay and your coffee will taste great.
You will receive a lighter taste, sometimes similar to tea, but you may prefer that I your early morning. Filter coffee is a great way to gradually wake up your receptors rather than bomb them with heavy and intensive tastes.
I had to choose. You may already know which method did I prefer? I had one chance to match the right grind size… and I typically like the exclusive coffees to be brewed on the V60. So that’s the winner today!
After the setup was done, it’s time to grind these Geisha beans.
The grind size is set and the coffee is already coming from the bottom of the grinder. Electric grinder is perfect, because you get your ground beans in less than 15 seconds. This would cost me probably more than 2-3 minutes if I had a hand grinder.
The brewing usually has to be done in 2:30-3:00 minutes to achieve a good amount of extraction. This is generally controlled with the grind size for this setup.
My brewing was done for a little bit over 3:30 minutes. Lighter roasts typically need more contact time (water with beans) so I was more than happy with the result. Now what? Coffee is brewed? Time to enjoy!
First impressions of the cup? It really blooms with its aroma even without having it in my mouth yet. Geisha coffee is always so light and delightful. Really like a bouquet of light jasmine and other spring flowers.
In the mouth the coffee reveals it’s full potential. The start, being light and flowerful, the aftertaste sweetly and fruitful. Watermelon and peach are just an illustration of these flavors on the aftertaste. Here we don’t have any chocolate notes at all. I like to enjoy such coffee beans on my V60 brewing setup. You just receive light and quite enjoying start of the day. I would definitely start every day of mine with this coffee.
And how did your day start like? Did you enjoy your morning coffee?
Wish all of you a beautiful and happy weekend.
See you!
Hi @mdosev
Your photos have definitely brightened my morning!
The soft beautiful flowers definitely compliment what you describe the taste of Geisha Coffee to be.
The colour of the brew looks so dark and rich too😋
I like what I see:)))
Yeah… for such a light roast it was definitely a bit surprising to see this dark color of the brewed coffee.
I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed my photos and I made your morning better. Also happy to have you around.
Best wishes!
Thanks for your lovely reply 😊
Yeah, I'm used to the light colour of your other coffees with fruity flavours:)))
Dunno how does Geisha coffee tastes since in our place the ones popular is Liberica and excelsa, but to how it looks like and to what you have said, I'm convinced it would be good. Though I can't smell the aroma from the screen, I get reminded. Thank you for sharing. I learned another kind of beans.
You’re very welcome! I’m glad you liked my post.
Are you from Japan? It seems so from your name. When I was in Japan I used to buy pretty good coffee from Kaldi shops, which are everywhere!
Oh no, I'm not but I often got mistaken as one. I just like Japanese names because the meanings are quite good and also anime. 😄 I'm from the Philippines, by the way.
I see! Anyway, thanks for stopping by!
